Route guidance by means of voice output, general
The route guidance through voice output function is an assistance function that assists the driver without distracting him from the traffic. The destination-oriented navigation of the navigation system is supported by voice outputs with the following information:
- Directional instructions
- Name of the next road to turn into

Voice output can be emitted in the following languages:
- English
- English
- French
- Spanish
- Italian
In addition, the following languages can be selected in vehicles without code (494) USA version:
- Dutch
- Danish
- Swedish
- Portuguese
- Turkish
- Russian
- Chinese

Additional voice messages are output at the start of the route calculation, when an intermediate stop is reached or when the destination is reached.
For vehicles without code (494) USA version, with dynamic route guidance additional voice messages are issued in response to routes influenced by traffic messages.

The COMAND control unit (A40/3) is operated through the following components:
- Front central operating unit (A40/9)
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)

The control signals from the front central operating unit are transmitted to the COMAND controller unit via the central CAN (CAN F).

The control signals of the multifunction steering wheel button groups are provided over the following route:
- Steering LIN (LIN E1)
- Steering column tube module (N80)
- Chassis CAN (CAN E)
- Central gateway control unit (N93)
- Central CAN
- COMAND controller unit

Function sequence for route guidance through voice outputs
The COMAND controller unit links the information of the internal navigation processor with word segments to form complete instructions and information, and generates appropriate audio signals. These are transmitted via the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) to the audio tuner control unit (N93/1), where they are amplified and output over the speakers listed below.
