Auto pilot system (APS), general
The radio with auto pilot system is the central operating unit for the entertainment and communications systems that are present in the vehicle.
The radio with auto pilot system enables radio stations to be received and played along with the playback of CDs in audio and MP3 format. It also contains an integrated navigation system, as well as a hands-free system for mobile phones.
On vehicles with code (511) Audio 50 APS with DVD changer, the DVD drive is designed as a changer, i.e. it can take up to six CDs or DVDs.
A separate function description exists for the mobile phone function and is therefore not described here.
The APS consists of the following subfunctions which are described in separate documents:
^ Audio mode, function
- Volume/tone settings, function
- Digital Audio Broadcasting (Digital Radio) (DAB), function (with code (537) Digital radio)
- Media interface, function (with Code (518) Media interface)
^ Navigation, function
^ DVD changer, function (with code (511) Audio 50 APS with DVD changer)
^ Voice control, function (with code (511) AUDIO 50 APS with DVD changer)
The displays and menus that appear on the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8) are generated in the radio with auto pilot system.
The following functions are also displayed in the multifunction display (A1p13) at the same time as being displayed in the Audio/COMAND display:
- "Audio"
- "Telephone"
- "Navigation"
The radio with auto pilot system communicates via the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) with the following control units:
- Media interface control unit (N125/1) (with code (518) Media interface)
- Digital Audio Broadcasting control unit (N87/3) (with code (537) Digital radio)
- Sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3) (with code (810) Sound system)
The radio with auto pilot system forms the central communications interface (gateway) between the interior CAN, telematics CAN (CAN A) and the MOST.
The auto pilot system is operated using the following controls:
- Controls on the radio with auto pilot system
The signals of the control buttons on the radio with auto pilot system are directly processed internally.
- Audio/COMAND control panel (A40/9)
The control signals of the Audio/COMAND control panel are sent over the telematics CAN to the radio with auto pilot system.
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)
The control signals of the multifunction steering wheel button group are read in by the steering column tube module control unit (N80) over steering LIN (LIN E1) and sent over chassis CAN (CAN E) to the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster forwards these via the interior CAN to the radio with auto pilot system.
