The SMS function for managing (e.g. reading or deleting) SMS messages is called up using the "Tel" basic function.

On vehicles with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer or code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) the basic "TEL" function can also be called up using the "TEL" menu in the application bar.
The "SMS" submenu can then be called up on the function bar. The "TEL" function key control signals are processed internally by the audio unit.
The control signals of the Audio/COMAND control panel (A40/9) are forwarded to the "audio equipment" via the telematics CAN (CAN A).
The Audio/COMAND display is actuated by the audio equipment over the low voltage differential signaling (LVDS) line.
