Navigation mode, general
The location of the vehicle, as well as the direction and distance to the destination are determined with the aid of the navigation system after entering the following information:
- Country
- Place name
- Road
- Intersection or house number (depending on the availability of the data)
- Town center
- ZIP code
- Special destinations (Points of Interest (POI))
The display is shown as arrow navigation in the instrument cluster (A1) and as a 2-D map display in the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8).
The processing speed is considerably improved by the use of read-only memory.
The following options can be selected in the "Mode" submenu (in the "Navi" main menu):
- "Short route"
- "Dynamic route"
- "Eco route" (as of 1.6.2010)
- "Fast route"
The following options can also be selected/deselected:
- "Avoid freeways"
- "Avoid toll roads"
- "Avoid tunnels"
- "Avoid ferries"
The following options can be selected in the "Map alignment" submenu (in the "Navi" main menu):
- "Northerly orientation"
- "Driving direction"
The following options can be selected in the "POI symbols on map" submenu (in the "Navi" main menu):
- "Standard symbols"
- "Personal symbols"
- "No symbols"
The following options can be selected in the "Information on map" submenu (in the "Navi" main menu):
- "Arrival time/distance"
- "Current road"
- "Geo-coordinates"
- "None"
The currently loaded country group (with version) can be displayed and changed in the "Load country groups" submenu (in the "Navi" main menu).
The following submenus (in the "Navi" main menu) can also be selected/deselected:
- "TMC messages" (Traffic Message Channel (TMC))
- "Audio lowering"
The following options can be selected in the "Position" submenu (in the "Navi" main menu):
- "Store vehicle position"

The "Special Destinations" menu is supplemented by the "Bypassing current location", "Bypassing other Locations" and "National Destinations" submenus. After entering or calling a destination location, route calculation starts. The following POI categories have been defined:
- "Interchanges"
- "Freeway service"
- "Airport"
- "Hotel or motel"
- "Hospital"
- "Parking lot"
- "Restaurant"
The system can be activated or deactivated or the destination and street can be entered using the following components:
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)
- Audio/COMAND control panel (A40/9)
- Control panel on the radio with auto pilot system (A2/56)
Function sequence
The data for reaching the destination (destination-oriented navigation) is calculated via the navigation system integrated into the radio with auto pilot system from the data entered. To this end, the navigation system is equipped with the following functions, which are described in separate documents
^ Position finding and destination-oriented navigation
^ Route guidance through voice output
The route is calculated in accordance with the options set. If observance of the options is not possible, then the options set are ignored for the sections in question and a message is displayed and signaled audibly. The set options can be displayed and changed at any time. After the calculation, the route is displayed by arrow pictograms and there is an acoustic information output stating "the route is calculated".
If the vehicle is no longer moving on the pre-calculated route, then the route is recalculated. If the recalculated values are plausible for the navigation system, then the modified route is displayed.
Dynamic route guidance
An alternative route is offered under dynamic route guidance if there is a traffic jam or a road block on the calculated route.
The control signals from the left multifunction steering wheel button group and the right multifunction steering wheel button group are transmitted to the radio with auto pilot system in the following way:
- Direct line
- Steering wheel electronics (N135)
- Steering LIN (LIN E1)
- Steering column module control unit (N80)
- Chassis CAN (CAN E)
- Instrument cluster
- Interior CAN (CAN B)
The control signals are transmitted via the telematics CAN (CAN A) to the radio with auto pilot system for entries via the Audio/ COMAND control panel.
The control signals are processed within the device for direct entry via the control panels on the radio with auto pilot system.
Voice input (with code (511) Audio 50 APS incl. DVD changer) is conducted using the hands-free system microphone (A67b1). The spoken word is converted into an electrical signal via the handsfree system microphone and forwarded to the radio with auto pilot system via a direct line.
For the voice control (in particular entering a destination) of the navigation (with code (511) Audio 50 APS with DVD changer) lists of names are also provided in the system.
The following lists are available for the voice control system:
- List of place names for selected towns on the data storage device
- Street name list for all towns/villages
- List of the relevant intersecting street
- Town center list
