Function requirements for automatic interior lights control, general
No overvoltage or undervoltage
(operating voltage range U ≥7 ≤17.5 V)

Automatic interior lights control in general
The automatic interior lights control implements the actuation of all components of the interior illumination (IBL), the warning and exit illumination and the load compartment illumination.
The corresponding requests are generated automatically. The master control unit for the automatic interior lights control is the front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1).

The automatic interior lights control feature consists of the following subfunctions:
^ Locator lighting function sequence
^ Function sequence for warning and exit illumination
^ Function sequence for load compartment illumination
^ Function sequence for interior illumination with anti-theft alarm system (ATA [EDW]) alarm
(with code (551) Anti-theft alarm system (ATA [EDW]))
^ Function sequence for interior illumination following an accident with airbag deployment

Additional function requirements for locator lighting
^ Automatic interior lights switched on via interior lamp automatic function switch (N70/3s3)
^ Vehicle unlocking via the central locking system (CL [ZV]) or
^ Intentionally leaving the vehicle by removing the transmitter key (A8/1) from the electronic ignition lock control unit (N73)

Locator lighting function sequence
The following signals are read in and evaluated by the front SAM control unit for controlling the locator lighting feature:
- Interior lamp automatic function switch status
- Status of central locking system and circuit 15 status provided on the interior CAN (CAN-B) by the electronic ignition lock control unit

The overhead control panel electronics (N70/3) are supplied with voltage by the front SAM control unit.

The front SAM control unit therefore indirectly actuates the interior illumination components listed below:
- Left front interior lamp (N70/3e4)
- Right front interior lamp (N70/3e5)
- Rear interior lamp (E15/3e3)

When unlocking the central locking, all lamps are switched off after t = 40 s or immediately if the vehicle is relocked within t = 3 s of being unlocked.
If leaving the vehicle intentionally, all the lamps are switched off after t = 15 s. The OFF delay time can be switched on or off via the "Settings" menu in the instrument cluster (A1). The respective selection is transmitted by the instrument cluster via the interior CAN to the front SAM control unit.

If the ambient illumination function has been activated via the instrument cluster, it automatically switches itself on when the vehicle is unlocked using the transmitter key.

This causes the "Standing lights actuation active" signal to be set, which also activates the search and symbol illumination. The search and symbol illumination function is described in a separate document.

On vehicles with code (954) Avantgarde or code (955) Elegance the front SAM control unit also actuates the following components in accordance with a defined brightness value:
- Right front footwell lamp (E17/15)
- Left front footwell lamp (E17/16)
- Left rear footwell lamp (E17/17)
- Right rear footwell lamp (E17/18)

The dimmer value of the footwell lamps is defined via the software calibration number (SCN) coding.

Function sequence for warning and exit illumination
The warning and exit illumination is activated by opening a vehicle door.

The following signals are read in and evaluated by the front SAM control unit for controlling the warning and exit illumination:
- Status of left front door rotary tumbler switch (A85s1) provided on the interior CAN by the left front door control unit (N69/1)
- Status of right front door rotary tumbler switch (A85/1s1) provided on the interior CAN by the right front door control unit (N69/2)
- Status of the left rear door rotary tumbler switch (A85/3s1) and status of the right rear door rotary tumbler switch (A85/4s1), provided on the interior CAN by the rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/2)

The front SAM control unit transmits the request to switch on the warning and exit illumination as well as the interior illumination v the interior CAN to the following control units:
- Left front door control unit
- Right front door control unit
- Left rear door control unit (N69/3)
- Right rear door control unit (N69/4)

The following components of the warning and exit illumination are actuated directly according to the door status:
- Left front door exit and warning lamp (E17/3) by the left front door control unit
- Right front door exit and warning lamp (E17/4) by the right front door control unit
- Left rear door exit and warning lamp (E17/5) by the left rear door control unit
- Right rear door exit and warning lamp (E17/6) by the right rear door control unit

Model 212.077/277:
The front SAM control unit also transmits the request to switch on the warning and exit illumination via the chassis CAN (CAN E) to the transmission mode control unit (N145).

The transmission mode control unit then actuates the following components in accordance with the door status:
- Left front illuminated door sill molding voltage converter (N99/9) and thus the left front illuminated door sill molding (E17/47)
- Right front illuminated door sill molding voltage converter (N99/10) and thus the right front illuminated door sill molding (E17/48)

The front illuminated door sill molding voltage converters supply the front illuminated door sill moldings with voltage. The luminescent films of the front illuminated door sill moldings operate at an operating voltage of U = 130 V.

The power supply for the front illuminated door sill moldings is interrupted after a maximum of t = 5 min.

If, as the result of a malfunction at the front illuminated door sill moldings, a front illuminated door sill molding voltage converter detects a load that is either too high or too low, it switches off the high-voltage output immediately for safety reasons.

The following components of the interior illumination are actuated indirectly through the power supply for the overhead control panel electronics via the front SAM control unit in accordance with the status of the interior lamp automatic function switch:
- Left front interior lamp
- Right front interior lamp
- Rear interior lamp

Furthermore, all the footwell lamps are actuated by the front SAM control unit at a brightness value that corresponds to 100%.

If all the vehicle doors are closed again and the circuit status circuit 15 On has been supplied by the electronic ignition lock control unit on the interior CAN, then the interior lights are switched off.
The footwell lamps are then actuated again at the defined brightness value.

To preserve the on-board electrical system battery (G1), with circuit 15 Off all the activated lamps are switched off after t = 5 min when a vehicle door is open and t = 8 s after the closing of the last vehicle door.

Additional load compartment illumination function requirements
^ Vehicle stationary
^ Trunk lid (model 212.0) or liftgate (model 212.2) open
^ Rain/light sensor (B38/2) signals "darkness detected" (only controls the trunk lid or liftgate ambient illumination)

Function sequence for load compartment illumination
The following signals are read in and evaluated by the front SAM control unit in order to control the load compartment illumination:
- Rain/light sensor data
- Trunk lid rotary tumbler switch status (M14/7s1) (model 212.0) or
Liftgate rotary tumbler switch status (M14/7s1) (model 212.2)

The front SAM control unit transmits the request to switch on the load compartment illumination via the interior CAN to the rear SAM control unit, which then actuates the following load compartment illumination components:
- Right trunk lamp (E18/4) (dimmed)
- Left trunk lamp (E18/5) (dimmed)
- Trunk lid ambient lamp (E40) (not dimmed) (model 212.0) or
- Left liftgate ambient lamp and warning lamp (E40/2) (not dimmed) (model 212.2)
- Right liftgate ambient lamp and warning lamp (E40/3) (not dimmed) (model 212.2)

To preserve the on-board electrical system battery, the ambient lamps and the trunk lamps are switched off t = 10 min after the trunk lid or liftgate has been opened.

The status of the front doors is supplied to the rear SAM control unit by the front door control units and the current circuit 15 status is provided on the interior CAN by the electronic ignition lock control unit, so that the load compartment illumination can be activated again at the end of a journey with the trunk lid or liftgate open. The ambient lamps and the trunk lamps are switched off after the trunk lid or the liftgate is closed.

Additional function requirements for interior illumination with ATA [EDW] alarm (with code (551) Antitheft alarm system (ATA [EDW]))
^ ATA [EDW] alarm activated

Function sequence for interior illumination with ATA [EDW] alarm (with code (551) Anti-theft alarm system (ATA [EDW]))
The interior illumination is activated immediately after an ATA [EDW] alarm has been triggered.

The rear SAM control unit transmits the "ATA [EDW] alarm triggered" signal via interior CAN to the front SAM control unit.

The following components of the interior illumination are actuated indirectly by the front SAM control unit through the power supply for the overhead control panel electronics:
- Left front interior lamp
- Right front interior lamp
- Rear interior lamp

Furthermore, the front SAM control unit actuates all footwell lamps.

Additional function requirements for interior illumination following an accident with airbag deployment
^ Airbag deployment by the supplemental restraint system control unit (N2/10) or
^ Crash detection by the crash sensor in the front SAM control unit
^ Vehicle stationary

Function sequence for interior illumination following an accident with airbag deployment
The interior illumination is actuated in order to provide better orientation for the occupants and the first air personnel following an accident.
If the supplemental restraint system control unit detects a crash event, it transmits corresponding information via the chassis CAN to the front SAM control unit. The front SAM control unit receives this and evaluates it.

The interior illumination function following an accident with airbag deployment is deactivated under the following conditions:
- Hazard warning flasher switch (S6/1s1) operated
- Unlocking the CL [ZV]
- Change in circuit status from circuit 15R to circuit 15 On
- Opening a vehicle door
