Mobile telephone system, general
The mobile phone system is a constituent of the audio system.
A distinction is made between the following variants of the mobile phone system:
- Basic telephony (without code (386) Comfort telephony) up to 30.6.2011 or as of 1.7.2011
- Comfort telephony (with code (386) Comfort telephony) up to 30.6.2011 or as of 1.7.2011
The new features in the telephone system as of 1.7.2011 are summarized at the end of this document.
Both variants use Bluetooth(R) technology for data transfer. The mobile phone used must support the hands-free profile (HFP) 1.0 or 1.5. The mobile phones that meet these requirements are listed at: http://www.mercedes-benz.com/connect
The system is described using the comfort telephony as an example. Differences from basic telephony are marked by the symbol
The mobile telephone system consists of the following subfunctions, which are described in separate documents:
^ Telephone switch-on/switch-off characteristics, function
^ Placing/ending phone call, function
^ Accept call and reject call with the mobile phone system, function
^ Mercedes-Benz Contact, function (without code (494) USA version)
^ Short Message Service (SMS) function (with code (386) Comfort telephony, as of 1.7.2011 with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer or code (526) COMAND with single DVD drive (without navigation) or code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) without code (498) Japan version or code (528) COMAND incl. DVD changer)
^ Voice control function with code (511) Audio 50 APS with DVD changer or code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer)
The mobile phone system provides the following variants for managing telephone numbers:
^ Telephone book (with code (523) MB Audio 20 radio, code (510) Audio 20 with CD changer, code (526) COMAND with single DVD drive (without navigation) or with code (528) COMAND incl. DVD changer)
^ Address book (in vehicles with navigation (code (525) MB Audio 50 APS radio or code (511) Audio 50 APS with DVD changer or code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer)
Telephone book (with code (523) MB Audio 20 radio, code (510) Audio 20 with CD changer, code (526) COMAND with single DVD drive (without navigation) or code (528) COMAND incl. DVD changer)
Telephone book entries stored in the audio equipment are managed in the telephone book. The entry of the Mercedes-Benz Service Center "MB Contact" appears in first place in the phone book.
The entries in the mobile phone's phone book can be loaded into the phone book of the audio device (external data). These telephone book entries are then permanently available, even in the mobile phone is no longer in the vehicle. External telephone book entries can be deleted separately. A telephone connection can be established directly from the telephone book entry. The phone book is called up as follows:
- Press "TEL" function key on audio equipment or - Calling "Tel" Menu via the application bar With code (526) COMAND with single DVD drive (without navigation) or code (528) COMAND incl. DVD changer
- Then select the "Name" submenu in the function bar
The phone book entries are shown on the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8). Navigation in the telephone book is possible on the audio/ COMAND control panel (A40/9).
Vehicles with basic telephony:
If the mobile phone supports the Bluetooth(R) Phone Book Access Profile (PBAP), the entries can be stored in the phone book using the function "Import contacts". If this is not the case, they must be transmitted with the function "Receive calling cards"
Access to the telephone book in the mobile phone is read only.
Address book (in vehicles with navigation (code (525) MB Audio 50 APS radio or code (511) Audio 50 APS with DVD changer or code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer)
On vehicles with navigation, the address data in the telephone book entries can also be managed in the address book. All names with telephone numbers in the address book entries stored can be displayed.
If an address book entry does not have telephone number, it does not appear in the telephone book, The address entries stored in the "audio equipment" and the data loaded from the mobile phone's phone book are displayed in the address book.
Data can also be transferred from other external devices (e.g. personal digital assistant (PDA), laptop) into the address book via the Bluetooth(R) interface of the mobile phone and the Bluetooth antenna (A2/91). These are then permanently available as an entry. The address-relevant applications for telephony can be started directly via the entries and provided with the data stored.

Bluetooth(R)
Using Bluetooth(R), it is possible to connect modern communication devices such as personal digital assistants (PDAs) or laptops to the mobile phone system quickly and easily. Bluetooth(R) is a worldwide open standard for connecting Bluetooth(R) devices (e.g. mobile phone) wirelessly and is based on radio technology in the 2.4 GHz range. One advantage of Bluetooth(R), in addition to the wide availability of Bluetooth(R) devices, is the uncomplicated and spontaneous connection of Bluetooth(R) devices to a Bluetooth(R) network (ad-hoc network). The extremely high data security (128- bit encoding) and the relatively limited radius (approx. 10 m) of this type of Bluetooth(R) network are what makes the use of Bluetooth(R) in the vehicle interesting. The audio equipment can integrate the latest-generation mobile phones into the vehicle hierarchy via the Bluetooth(R) interface of the mobile phone and the Bluetooth antenna.
As of 1.6.2010, devices connected via Bluetooth(R) can also be use for audio applications on vehicles with code (528) COMAND with DVD changer, code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer. A precondition for this is that the Bluetooth(R) devices support the corresponding profiles. If the telephone currently connected does not support the profiles for the audio applications, the connection to the telephone is disconnected by connecting an audio source via Bluetooth(R).
Further information can be found in the description of the audio mode.
New products/features as of 1.7.2011 (with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer or code (526) COMAND with single DVD drive (without navigation) or code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or code (528) COMAND incl. DVD changer)
^ On vehicles with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer or code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation), address data on a Secure Digital (SD) card inserted into the card slot on the COMAND controller unit or a USB memory stick connected to the Universal Serial Bus (USB) electrical connection (X115) can be stored in the address book.
^ If the mobile phone is in the Full Function Portable (FFP) status, an active call is held while another call is responded to, and it i then possible to toggle between the two calls using the COMAND controller unit (A40/3).
^ The reading and management of SMS messages is also possible during basic telephony if the mobile phone supports the Message Access Profile (MAP).
^ The speed dialing list can be used to store up to 10 phone book entries on the COMAND controller unit control buttons.
^ On vehicles with code (386) Comfort telephony an SIM Access Profile (SAP) module can be plugged onto the Bluetooth module.
