Audio system, general
The radio (A2) is the central operating unit for the entertainment and communication systems integrated into the vehicle.
On vehicles with code (510) Audio 20 with CD changer, the CD drive is designed as a changer, i.e. a selection can be made between up to 6 CDs.
The mobile phone function is available as a separate function description and is therefore not described here.
The audio system consists of the following subfunctions which are described in separate documents:
^ Volume/tone settings function
^ Audio mode, function
^ Digital Audio Broadcasting (Digital Radio) (DAB) function (with code (537) Digital radio)
^ Media interface function (with code (518) Media Interface)
^ DVD changer function (with code (510) Audio 20 with CD changer)
The displays and menu displays that are output on the Audio/ COMAND display (A40/8) are generated in the radio.
In vehicles with code (510) Audio 20 with CD changer, the radio communicates with the following control units via Media Oriented System Transport (MOST):
- Media interface control unit (N125/1) (with code (518) Media interface)
- Digital Audio Broadcasting control unit (N87/3) (with code (537) Digital radio)
- Sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3) (with code (810) Sound system)
The radio acts as gateway (communication interface).
It relays the signals from the interior CAN (CAN B) to the components of the telematics CAN (CAN A and, if applicable, to the MOST (with code (510) Audio 20 incl. CD changer).
The audio system can be operated using the following controls:
- Control buttons on the radio
- Audio/COMAND control panel (A40/9)
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)
The control signals of the multifunction steering wheel button groups are read in by the steering column tube module control unit (N80) by the steering wheel electronics (N135) via the steering LIN (LIN E1) and transmitted to the instrument cluster (A1) via the chassis CAN (CAN E). The instrument cluster forwards these signals via the interior CAN to the radio.
