Front passenger footwell, partially disassembled
N62/2 Video and radar sensor system control unit

Location
The video and radar sensor system control unit is located at the front right in the front passenger footwell under a cover.

Task
The video and radar sensor system control unit is unit that evaluates the short and the long range radar. To do this the video and radar sensor system control unit performs the following tasks:
- Reading in of sensors, pickups and signals
- Evaluation of input factors
- Controlling of systems
- Output of signals

Reading in of sensors, pickups and signals
The input factors are read in via the following connections:
- Low voltage differential signal (LVDS) line (for code (238) Active Lane Keeping Assist)
- Chassis CAN (CAN E)
- Vehicle dynamics CAN (CAN H)
- Sensor CAN (CAN S)

Low voltage differential signaling line (for code (238) Active Lane Keeping Assist)
The video and radar sensor system control unit receives image data from the multifunction camera (A40/11) via an LVDS line.

Chassis CAN
As an example the video and radar sensor system control unit reads in the following information via the chassis CAN:
- Status of the accelerator pedal
- Drive position status
- Stage status
- Service brake, status
- Yaw rate status
- Status information from the driver assist or driving safety system
- Wheel speeds and wheel rotation direction
- Brake torque
- Drive torque
- Tire pressure
- Parking brake status
- Status of steering angle
- Position data from navigation (for the Western Europe version)
- Driver request via the cruise control lever (S40/4)
- Driver request via menu settings in the instrument cluster (A1)
- Status of the flasher (for code (237) Active Blind Spot Assist)
- Status of the trailer (for code (237) Active Blind Spot Assist and code (550) AHV)
- Lane data (for code (238) Active Lane Keeping Assist)

The functions resulting therefrom are described in the corresponding function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).

Vehicle dynamics CAN
The signals from the following components are read in via the vehicle dynamics CAN:
- DISTRONIC electric controller unit (A89) (with code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS or with code (237) Active Blind Spot Assist)
- Long range radar radar data
- Long range radar diagnosis data

The functions resulting therefrom are described in the corresponding function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).

Sensor CAN
The signals of the following components are read in via the sensor CAN:
- With code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS or code (237) Active Blind Spot Assist
- Left front bumper DISTRONIC (DTR) sensor (B29/2)
- Right front bumper DISTRONIC (DTR) sensor (B29/3)
- For code (237) Active Blind Spot Assist
- Left rear bumper radar sensor (B29/6)
- Right rear bumper radar sensor (B29/7)

The functions resulting therefrom are described in the corresponding function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).

Evaluation of input factors
The input factors are evaluated by the integrated microprocessors and the relevant components are then actuated.

Control of systems
The video and radar sensor system control unit controls the following functions depending on the equipment present:
- Variable Speed Limiter function (Speedtronic) (without code (494) USA version)
- Permanent Speed Limiter (e.g. operation with winter tires)
- DISTRONIC PLUS (for code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS)
- Automatic deactivation of the radar sensor system (for the Western European version)
- Active Blind Spot Assist (with code (237) Active Blind Spot Assist)
- Active Lane Keeping Assist (for code (238) Active Lane Keeping Assist)

Output of signals
The signals are issued over the following connections:
- Chassis CAN
- Vehicle dynamics CAN
- Sensor CAN

Chassis CAN
With code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS, the video and radar sensor system control unit transmits the following signal via the chassis CAN:
- Request to increase engine torque
- Request to decrease engine torque
- Request to limit stages
- Request to increase stages
- Request to reduce stages
- Request to issue warning tones
- Request to issue system or warning messages
- Request for PRE-SAFE measures
- Braking requests

With code (237) Active blind spot assist, the video and radar sensor system control unit sends the following signals via the chassis CAN:
- Request to activate left blind spot assist ready and warning display (M21/1e2) or right blind spot assist ready and warning display (M21/2e2)
- Request to issue warning tones
- Request to issue system or warning messages

For code (238) Active Lane Keeping Assist transmits the video and radar sensor system control unit the following example signals via the chassis CAN:
- Request to issue warning tones
- Request to issue system or warning messages

The functions resulting therefrom are described in the corresponding function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).

Vehicle dynamics CAN
For code (233) DISTRONIC PLUS the video and radar sensor system control unit transmits the following signals via the vehicle dynamics CAN:
- Radar requirements of the long range radar (vehicle / operation-specific data
- Diagnosis request

For code (237) Active Blind Spot Assist or code (238) Active Lane Keeping Assist the video and radar sensor system control unit transmits the following signals via the dynamics CAN:
- Wheel selective brake system intervention

The functions resulting therefrom are described in the corresponding function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).

Sensor CAN
The video and radar sensor system control unit transmits the following signals via the sensor CAN:
- Radar requirements of the short range radar (vehicle / operation-specific data)
- Diagnosis request

The functions resulting therefrom are described in the corresponding function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).
