Function sequence for loading present SMS to audio equipment
With code (386) Comfort telephony, the SMS messages already stored in the mobile phone are sent over the following path from the mobile phone to the audio device:
- Cradle
- Bluetooth module
- Bluetooth antenna (A2/91)
- Direct line
- Audio unit
On vehicles as of 1.7.2011 without code (386) Comfort telephony, incoming existing SMS messages are sent by the mobile phone to the Bluetooth antenna and forwarded from there to the audio device.
Under certain circumstances loading SMS messages may take a long time. This may be because of the mobile phone or the number of SMS messages in the mobile phone.

Function sequence for receiving SMS message
On vehicles as of 1.7.2011 without code (386) Comfort telephony, incoming SMS messages are sent by the mobile phone to the Bluetooth antenna and forwarded from there to the audio device.

Function sequence for calling up messaging application
The SMS function for managing (e.g. reading or deleting) SMS messages is called up using the "Tel" basic function.
The "TEL" base function is called up by pressing the "TEL" function key on the audio unit. The corresponding basic mask appears. In vehicles with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer or code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or code (528) COMAND with DVD changer, the "TEL" base function can also be called up via the "TEL" menu in the application bar.
The "SMS" submenu can then be called up on the function bar.
The "TEL" function key control signals are processed internally by the audio unit.
The control signals of the Audio/COMAND control panel (A40/9) are forwarded to the "audio equipment" via the telematics CAN (CAN A).
The Audio/COMAND display is actuated by the audio equipment over the low voltage differential signaling (LVDS) line.

Function sequence for displaying SMS message
The SMS content is displayed on the Audio/COMAND display. The audio equipment actuates the Audio/COMAND display over the low voltage differential signaling line.

Function sequence for composing and transmitting SMS message
SMS messages can only be read and transmitted using the control buttons on the mobile phone.
The control signals from the mobile phone's control buttons are processed internally.
With code (386) Comfort telephony, the mobile phone then sends the SMS message over the following path to the receiver:
- Cradle
- Direct line
- Multifunction antenna
On vehicles as of 1.7.2011 without code (386) Comfort telephony, the mobile phone sends the SMS message over the mobile telephone network to the receiver.

- Left door bass speaker (H4/1h2)
- Right door tweeter (H4/2h1)
- Right door bass speaker (H4/2h2)
On vehicles with code (810) Sound system, the audio equipment sends the audio signals through the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) to the sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3), which then amplifies them and outputs them over the following speakers:
- Door tweeter
- Door bass speaker
- Rear tweeter
- Rear bass speaker
- Center instrument panel speaker (H4/27)
