Navigation mode, general
The navigation mode is an assistant function which supports the driver in reaching his/her destination without diverting his/her attention from traffic. This is done by:
- Route planning, route calculation and destination-oriented navigation
- Visual driving instructions in form of pictograms
- Intersection zoom
- Acoustic driving recommendations
- Display of navigation maps
The location of the vehicle and the direction and distance to the destination are determined with the aid of the navigation system.
The navigation system consists of several subfunctions:
^ Function sequence for navigation mode
Further subfunctions are described in separate documents:
^ Position finding and destination-oriented navigation, function
^ Route guidance through voice output, function
The navigation system can be operated using the following components:
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110)
- Audio/COMAND control panel ()A40/9
- Control buttons on the COMAND controller unit
- Voice control system (VCS [SBS])
Function sequence for navigation mode
The navigation processor integrated into the COMAND controller unit calculates the route for reaching the destination (navigation) from the data entered. The route is then calculated taking the configured options into consideration. If it should not be possible to adhere to the options, then the configured options are ignored for the stretch in question and a corresponding message is displayed (on dynamic destination-oriented navigation system only) as well as acoustically sounded. The configured criteria and options can be displayed and changed. After calculation, the route is shown through arrow symbols in the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8) and the instrument cluster (A1). An acoustic announcement is then made, saying "The route is calculated". Where applicable, a driving lane recommendation is also shown on the Audio/COMAND display and instrument cluster.
If the vehicle is no longer moving on the pre-calculated route, then the route is recalculated. If the recalculated values are plausible for the navigation system, then the modified route is displayed.
When entered using the Audio/COMAND control panel, the control signals are sent via the telematics CAN (CAN A) to the COMAND controller unit.
When directly entered using the control buttons on the COMAND controller unit, the control signals are processed within the COMAND controller unit.
Voice input takes place via the hands-free system microphone (A67b1). The signals from the hands-free system microphone are routed over a direct line to the COMAND controller unit.
The voice control system is activated using the right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111).
The control signals for the multifunction steering wheel button groups proceed as follows:
- Steering wheel electronics (N135)
- Steering LIN (LIN E1)
- Steering column module control unit (N80)
- Chassis CAN (CAN E)
- Instrument cluster
- Interior CAN (CAN B)
- COMAND control unit
