Symbol and ambiance illumination in general
The symbol and ambiance illumination feature provides the brightness-adjustable illumination of all controls as well as the illumination of the vehicle interior.

The symbol and ambiance illumination feature consists of the following subfunctions:
^ Function sequence for search and symbol illumination
^ Function sequence for ambiance illumination

Additional function requirements, search and symbol illumination
^ Standing lights on, circuit 58

Function sequence for search and symbol illumination
In order to control the search and symbol illumination the IC (A1) reads in the following signals and evaluates them:
- Status of standing lights actuation provided by the front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1) on the interior CAN (CAN B)
- Status of instrument illumination brightness control (A1r1) (continuous adjustment of the search and symbol illumination)

If the "ambient illumination" function has been activated via the "set up", "light" menu in the instrument cluster, it automatically switches itself on when the vehicle is unlocked using the transmitter key (A8/1). This causes "Standing lights actuation active" status to be set, which also activates the search and symbol illumination.

If the driver door is then opened, the ambient illumination function goes off. "Standing lights actuation active" status is canceled, and the instrument cluster deactivates the search and symbol illumination. The controls in the vehicle are not illuminated again until the transmitter key in the electronic ignition lock control unit (N73) is moved into the radio position (circuit 15R On).

The instrument cluster uses the incoming data to generate the circuit 58d signal and transmits it to the actuation for the search and symbol illumination via the interior CAN to the following components:
- Radio (A2) (with code (510) Audio 20 with CD changer or with code (523) MB Audio 20 radio)
- Radio with auto pilot system (A2/56)
(with code (511) Audio 50 APS with DVD changer or code (525) MB Audio 50 APS radio)
- COMAND controller unit (A40/3)
(with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer or code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or code (528) COMAND incl. DVD changer)
- Front SAM control unit
- Rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module ()N10/2
- Rear control unit ()N22/6
- Automatic air conditioning control and operating unit (N22/7)
- Left front door control unit ()N69/1
- Right front door control unit ()N69/2

The symbol illumination for the trunk lid emergency opening switch (S88/10) (with code (494) USA version) is actuated by the rear SAM control unit independently of the circuit 58d signal.

The COMAND controller unit makes the circuit 58d signal available for the following component on the telematics CAN (CAN A):
- Audio/COMAND control panel ()A40/9

The front SAM control unit actuates the following components:
- Actuation via the instrument panel LIN (LIN 1):
- Upper control panel control unit (N72/1)
- Exterior lights switch (S1)
- Instrument panel switch group (S6/1)

- Direct actuation:
- Overhead control panel electronics (N70/3)
- Cigarette lighter with front ashtray illumination (R3) (with code (301) Ashtray package/smoker package)

- Actuation via the instrument panel circuit 58d connector sleeve (Z50/1):
- Left center air vent symbol illumination (E10/1)
- Left front side air vent symbol illumination (E10/2)
- Right front side air vent symbol illumination (E10/3)
- Right center air vent symbol illumination (E10/4)
- Rear vent symbol illumination (E10/5) (with code (581) Comfort automatic air conditioning)

The front SAM control unit SAM also passes on the signal from circuit 58d to the following control units via the chassis CAN (CAN E):
- CDI control unit (N3/9) (on diesel engine)
- ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10) (on gasoline engine)
- Steering column module control unit (N80)

The CDI control unit or the ME-SFI [ME] control unit makes the signal from circuit 58d available to the electronic selector lever module control unit (N15/5) (for transmission 722) via the drive train CAN (CAN C).

The electronic selector lever module control unit directly actuates the following components:
- Shift gate symbol illumination (E12)
- Transmission mode button for automatic transmission (S16/12)

The steering column tube module control unit actuates the following components:
- Actuation via the steering LIN (LIN E1):
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110)
- Right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)

The rear control unit actuates the following components directly:
- Left rear power window switch (S21/3)
- Right rear power window switch (S21/4)
- Soft top control switch (S84) (model 207.4)

The automatic air conditioning control and operating unit actuates the search and symbol illumination of the integrated controls directly and the rear automatic air conditioning operating unit (N22/4) (with code (581) C-AAC) via the climate control LIN (LIN B8).

The left front door control unit controls the following functions:
- Actuation via left door LIN (LIN B5):
- Driver-side power window and outside mirror adjustment switch group (S20)
- Left front seat adjustment switch group (S22) (with code (275) Memory package (driver seat, steering column, mirror))

- Direct actuation:
- Trunk lid release button (S15/1)
- Left front door central locking interior switch (S85/5)

The right front door control unit controls the following functions:
- Actuation via right door LIN (LIN B6):
- Right front seat adjustment switch group (S23) (with code (242) Electrically adjustable front passenger seat with memory)

- Direct actuation:
- Power window switch, passenger-side (S21/2)
- Right front door central locking interior switch (S85/6)

Additional function requirements for ambiance illumination
^ Standing lights on, circuit 58
^ Circuit 15 R On (footwell-, ambient illumination)
^ Rain/light sensor (B38/2) signals "Darkness detected"
^ Lighting strength of search and symbol illumination adjusted

Function sequence for ambiance illumination
The diffuse lighting of the center console, the doors and the footwells is designated as ambiance illumination. The brightness can be adjusted using the instrument illumination brightness control.
The ambiance illumination is functionally an integral part of the search and symbol illumination.

The following information is read and evaluated in to control the ambiance illumination by the IC via the interior CAN:
- Status of the standing lights actuation and status of the rain/ light sensor by the front SAM control unit
- Circuit status of circuit 15 and status of the central locking (ZV) made available by the electronic ignition lock control unit
- Status of brightness of the symbol illumination made available by the IC

The IC then sends the request to switch on the ambiance illumination via the interior CAN to the following control units:
- Front SAM control unit
- Left front door control unit
- Right front door control unit

The front SAM control unit actuates the following components:
- Ambient lamp (A67e3) in the inside rearview mirror (A67)
- Right front footwell lamp (E17/15)
- Left front footwell lamp (E17/16)

The footwell lamps are actuated adjusted with defined illumination strength which is established via the SCN coding. When opening a vehicle door the footwell lamps are actuated with the illumination strength which represents 100%.

The left front door control unit controls the following component:
- Left front door handle illumination (E17/11)

The right front door control unit controls the following component:
- Right front door handle illumination (E17/12)

The door handle illuminations for the front door also remain on for the case of loss of the circuit 58d signal until a time interval of t = 30 min has expired or the vehicle is locked over the central locking.

If the "ambient illumination" function has been activated via the "set up", "light" menu in the instrument cluster, it automatically switches itself on when the vehicle is unlocked using the transmitter key (). This causes "Standing lights actuation active" status to be set, which also activates the ambiance illumination. The ambient lamps and the front door door handle illumination. If the driver door is then opened, the ambient illumination function goes off.

"Standing lights actuation active" status is canceled, and therefore the front SAM control unit deactivates the ambiance illumination. The controls in the vehicle are not illuminated again until the transmitter key in the electronic ignition lock control unit is turned into the radio position (circuit 15R On).

For circuit 15R On and an implausible signal from circuit 58d the components of the ambiance illumination are actuated with a fixed defined value. The circuit status circuit 15 is transmitted by the electronic ignition lock control unit via the interior CAN to the respective control units.
