View of manual transmission 711.65 with code (B03) ECO start/stop function

6-speed manual transmission

The manual transmission is a fully synchronized three-shaft transmission with six forward gears and one reverse gear. The 6th gear is designed as a fuel consumption and speed reducing overdrive.

The manual transmission is coupled to a single-plate clutch with a central clutch release bearing and automatic wear adjustment. The lifetime oil filling means that the manual transmission is maintenance free.

Precise and smooth shifting with short shift travels are achieved by the following measures:
- Transfer of gearshift lever movement to the transmission through shift rod
- Needle-bearing-supported main shifter shaft
- Multiple cone synchronization from 1st to 4th gear
- Single cone synchronization of 5th and 6th gear and reverse gear

Further subfunctions are described in separate documents:
^ Shift operation, function
^ Synchronization, function

B79/2 Transmission neutral position sensor

The gear sets, the drive shaft (11), the main shaft (10) and the countershaft (12) are located between two bearing planes

The two transmission housing parts sealed with liquid sealant consist of a light alloy.

The input shaft (11) is mounted in the flywheel by a pilot bearing and in the transmission housing by means of a grooved ball bearing.

The input shaft and the main shaft are plugged into each other in the transmission housing on a common shaft level and mounted on grooved ball bearings.

In the drive shaft and main shaft assembly the main shaft (10) is also carried by a roller sleeve (22) at the drive shaft end.

The countershaft (12) is of a hollow-shaft design to reduce weight, and it is mounted on a grooved ball bearing and roller sleeve. The main shifter shaft (16), on which is located the permanent magnet (19) for the position sensor for transmission neutral position, is supported by two needle roller bearings.

Due to the very close production tolerances for gear wheels and transmission housing parts as well as the use of roller sleeves no play adjustment of the shafts is possible or required.
