Making telephone calls in "private mode" is only possible by using a Bluetooth headset or in the rear using a Bluetooth handset.
The combination of the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit and the relevant UPCI [UHI] portable CTEL holder (Universal Portable CTEL Interface) enables different portable CTELs (e.g. Motorola) to be operated. Equipment (e.g. laptop) with Bluetooth capability can also be operated.

On model 221 up to 31.8.06, voice input takes place via the 4 microphones integrated in the hands-free system microphone group in the inside rearview mirror unit (A67)
On model 221 as of 1.9.06 and on model 216, voice input takes place via the 2 microphones integrated in the hands-free system microphone group in the inside rearview mirror unit.
The UPCI [UHI] system contains the following functions:
^ Establish phone calls in hands-free mode
^ Display call numbers and caller ID
^ Display stored telephone numbers from the portable CTEL or from the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit in the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster and display in the COMAND display
^ Selection of the menu item "TEL" with the system selection button via the left multifunction steering wheel button group
^ Select the menu item "TEL" via the front central operating unit
^ Scrolling (telephone directory function) using the scroll forward/back button via the left multifunction steering wheel button group
^ Selection of the "Accept or terminate phone call" function using the accept/terminate phone call button integrated in the right multifunction steering wheel button group
^ Transmission of all audio signals via MOST
^ Voice control
^ Voice input via the hands-free system microphone group
^ Activation of the UPCI [UHI] system takes place via the On/Off button on the portable CTEL or automatically by means of a wake-up pulse via MOST
^ Deactivation of the UPCI [UHI] system takes place via the On/Off button on the portable CTEL or automatically after the run-on time set on the portable CTEL
^ Voice output via the audio speaker system
^ Muting an active audio source during a phone call
^ Display of provider name in COMAND display
^ Writing, reading and transmitting SMS messages
The volume of the audio speaker system can be set individually by the user. This can be done via the buttons + and - for setting specific functions and volume control integrated in the multifunction steering wheel or via the portable CTEL.
The functions are indicated by several displays (e.g. "ENTER PIN"), which notify the user of the operating condition of the portable CTEL, in the displays of the following components:
