The gasoline injection and ignition system with DI creates the engine timing "MED 17.7.3" in an electrical combination with the sensors and actuators of engines 157 AMG and 278 DE (Direkt-E inspritzung).
The abbreviated designation MED 17.7.3 means:M = Motronic

The ME-SFI [ME] control unit contains the whole engine control.
The engine control system reads in sensor data both directly and via the CAN network and actuates the corresponding actuators. Here the individual functions and systems of the engine timing are controlled and coordinated by the ME-SFI [ME] control unit.

Diagnosis
For diagnostic purposes, the Diagnosis Assistance System (DAS) can be used to read out and delete the engine control fault codes, and to actuate certain specific diagnostic functions.
CAN network
The ME-SFI [ME] control unit exchanges data with other control units via the connected drive train CAN and chassis CAN which are integrated in the CAN network.
The ME-SFI [ME] control unit also acts as the interface (gateway) between the two CAN bus systems.
Flash programming
The engine control in the ME-SFI [ME] control unit is flash programmable, that is the complete software in the control unit can be replaced using the DAS (installed new). The software required for control unit programming can be found on the Star Diagnosis Update DVD.
