LIGHT TRUCK:
1993 VILLAGER
ISSUE:
The liftgate lights and/or the door ajar indicator light may flicker on and off or, in some cases, remain on. In addition, a no start condition may exist after the vehicle sits for long periods or overnight. This occurs because the liftgate latch lever has insufficient clearance to the internal switch causing intermittent or continuous contact while driving and the liftgate lights remain on, draining the battery.
ACTION:
Replace the liftgate latch with a redesigned latch which has additional clearance between the latch lever and switch. Refer to the following procedure for service details.
REMOVAL
1. Remove the liftgate trim panel. Refer to the 1993 Villager Service Manual, Section 01-05, for the removal procedure.
2. Peel back the plastic weather shield from the liftgate.
3. Disconnect the liftgate latch switch electrical connector.
4. Remove the three (3) linkage rods from the latch.
5. Remove the two (2) liftgate latch bolts and the liftgate latch from the liftgate, Figure 1.
INSTALLATION
1. Position the liftgate latch (F3XY-12219A64-E, fixed glass, or F3XY-12219A64-F, hatch glass) on the liftgate and install the two (2) liftgate latch bolts. Tighten the liftgate latch bolts to 10-11 N-m (89-97 lb.in.).
2. Install the three (3) linkage rods to the latch.
3. Adjust the blue cam nut/linkage rod clearance by rotating the cam nut, Figure 2.
4. Adjust the free play in the linkage rod to 1.0 +/- 0.5 mm, Figure 3.
NOTE:
DO NOT BEND THE LINKAGE ROD. IF THE FREE PLAY CANNOT BE ACHIEVED, LEAVE THE BLUE CAM NUT IN THE LOWEST SETTING AND CONTINUE.
5. Connect the liftgate latch switch electrical connector.
6. Attach the plastic weather shield to the liftgate.
7. Install the liftgate trim panel. Refer to the 1993 Villager Service Manual, Section 01-05, for the installation procedure.
