Engine: Service and Repair
REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
1. Relieve fuel system pressure. then drain cooling system and disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove fresh air duct and resonance chamber, then drain engine oil.
3. Disconnect overflow tube from radiator, then remove coolant reservoir.
4. Disconnect Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS), valve body wiring harness, starter motor, Manual Lever Position (MLP) switch, Exhaust Gas Recirculation Control (EGRC) solenoid, Throttle Position (TP) sensor, idle switch and Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor electrical connectors.
5. then the fuel lines and plug.
6. Disconnect carbon canister vacuum lines, then the ignition coil electrical connector and remove ignition coil.
7. Disconnect distributor electrical connector, then the distributor cap. Position cap aside to gain access to main engine wiring harness.
8. Disconnect main engine wiring harness clips from breather tube brackets, then the fuel injector electrical connectors.
9. Remove two ground wire bolts from intake plenum and position ground wires aside.
10. Disconnect power transistor, Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor, temperature gauge sender, magnetic clutch and A/C high-pressure switch electrical connectors and two main harness connectors from righthand side of intake plenum.
11. Disconnect speed control cable from throttle lever, if equipped, then the accelerator cable from throttle lever.
12. Remove speed control cable from hanging support, if equipped, then remove accelerator cable from bracket attached to top of intake plenum.
13. Remove bolts attaching accelerator cable/speed control cable bracket to intake plenum and position aside.
14. Disconnect upper and lower radiator hoses from radiator, then remove two upper A/C compressor to accessory bracket bolts.
15. Disconnect heater hoses, then remove ground wire from dipstick bracket.
16. Disconnect brake booster vacuum hose from lefthand side of intake plenum, then loosen A/C compressor drive belt tensioner and remove A/C belt.
17. Raise and support vehicle, then remove splash shields.
18. Remove shift cable nut from MLP switch, then slide shift cable off of MLP switch.
19. Release lockpin from shift cable bracket using a screwdriver, then remove shift cable from shift cable bracket.
20. Disconnect low oil pressure switch, oil level sensor and alternator electrical connectors.
21. Remove B-terminal nut and alternator ground wire nut from alternator and position wires aside.
22. Remove alternator wiring bracket nut from back of alternator, then loosen alternator lock and adjustment bolts.
23. Loosen front and rear alternator to accessory bracket bolts, then remove alternator belt.
24. Loosen power steering pump tensioner and adjustment bolts, then remove power steering pump belt.
25. Remove front and rear power steering pump to bracket bolts, then position power steering pump aside.
NOTE: Access front power steering pump to bracket bolts through holes in pulley.
26. Remove lower A/C compressor to accessory bracket bolts and position aside, then the converter inlet pipe to catalytic converter nuts. Discard nuts and gasket.
27. Remove oxygen sensor wire clips, then disconnect oxygen sensor electrical connector.
28. Remove front exhaust manifold flange cover, then the converter inlet pipe to exhaust bracket bolt.
29. Remove left and righthand exhaust manifold to converter inlet pipe nuts. Discard nuts and gaskets.
30. Remove converter inlet pipe from vehicle, then the driveshafts.
31. Disconnect and plug transaxle cooler lines and hoses.
NOTE: transaxle cooler hose to cooler line connections to ensure proper installation.
32. Disconnect transaxle ground, then position powertrain lift under engine and transaxle assembly.
33. Remove lefthand front transaxle mount bolts and righthand rear transaxle mount nuts.
34. Remove transverse member, then carefully lower engine and transaxle from engine compartment.
35. Remove upper transaxle to engine bolts, then the exhaust bracket.
36. Remove front and rear transaxle to engine brace bolts, then the lower transaxle to engine bolt.
37. Remove torque converter to flex plate bolts, then separate transaxle from engine assembly.
38. Reverse procedure to install.
