Diagnostic Function Descriptions

The NGS Scan Tool, through the vehicle Data Link Connector (DLC), provides access to several systems in the vehicle for diagnosis, testing, and adjustment. The following functions can be accessed through the NGS Scan Tool when selecting LINK MONITOR/RECORD from the main menu:

DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE RESULTS
Displays the results of the Diagnostic Test Mode.
- Receives the results of the Diagnostic Test Mode from the control module (PCM or TCM) and displays the malfunctioning component(s), if present, along with diagnostic trouble code(s) on the left of the screen display. For ENGINE only, number(s) to the right of the screen display indicate the number of times the vehicle has been running since the fault(s) cleared. A zero indicates the fault is still present.
- Prints the results of the Diagnostic Test Mode through the RS-232 link, if connected to a printer.
- Sends a command to the control module (PCM or TCM) to erase all stored diagnostic trouble codes. A NO FAILURE message is displayed (with a pass code 55 for engine only). If new faults occur (or old faults are still present) the NO FAILURES is replaced by the faults.

DATA MONITOR AND RECORD
Displays data relative to the control module (PCM or TCM) input signals and various output-related data.
- Receives data from the control module, and displays it on the screen display.
- Records data for a certain period, and stores it in one of four areas to be viewed or printed out.
- Receives the results of a Real-Time Diagnosis (the latest results of the check by the control module). In AUTO recording, it starts recording when a diagnostic trouble code(s) is detected. Also, it displays the failed component(s) and the diagnostic trouble code(s) after the data storing is completed.

WORK SUPPORT (Available on ENGINE only)
Supports inspections and adjustments.
- Sends commands to the control module for setting basic adjustments for required operation.
- Receives input/output signals necessary for operation from the PCM, and displays the received data.

ACTIVE TESTS (Available on ENGINE only)
Changes the control state of the PCM according to the commands from the NGS Scan Tool.
- Turns actuators on/off according to the commands transmitted by the NGS Scan Tool, to confirm that they operate properly by listening for operating sounds.
- Substitutes values for a sensor or actuator according to the commands transmitted by the NGS Scan Tool. This allows the technician to pinpoint a malfunctioning part by searching for changes in the system operating conditions.

PCM PART NUMBER (for ENGINE) or TCM PART NUMBER (for AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION)
Displays the part number of the control module.
- Receives the part number recorded in the control module, and displays it on the screen.
