TRANSAXLE - 4F20E - HARSH UPSHIFT IN ALL GEARS WHEN ACCELERATING - VEHICLES BUILT FROM 4/13/92 THROUGH 12/1/92 WITH TRANSAXLE SERIAL NUMBERS UP TO 4X56258
LIGHT TRUCK:
1993 VILLAGER
ISSUE:
There may be a harsh upshift in all gears when accelerating. This occurs because of metal contamination in the solenoid assembly causing maximum line pressure.
ACTION:
Replace the shift solenoid assembly and transaxle pan gasket. Manufacturing process changes have been made to the new shift solenoid assembly to avoid contamination. Refer to the following procedure for service details.
1. Confirm that the last five (5) digits of the transaxle serial number are less than 56258, (Example - 4X56257). See Figure 1 for the transaxle serial number location.
a. Perform the 4F20E (automatic transaxle) Quick Test per Section 5B-30 in the 1993 Villager Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis Service Manual. Repair accordingly.
b. Review the symptom chart on Page 07-01-21 of the 1993 Villager Service Manual for harsh shifts. Perform OP 1, "Check line pressure and control". If line pressure is continually high, replace the shift solenoid assembly (F3XY-7G484-A).
2. Remove the existing shift solenoid assembly. Refer to the 1993 Villager Service Manual, Page 07-01-35, for the removal procedure.
3. Install a new shift solenoid assembly (F3XY-7G484-A) and transaxle pan gasket (F3XY-7A191-A). Refer to the 1993 Villager Service Manual, Page 07-01-37, for the installation procedure.
