LIGHT TRUCK:
1993-97 VILLAGER

ISSUE:
A "squealing" or "grinding" noise from either the front or rear brakes may occur when the customer lightly applies the brakes. In addition, a "groan" may be heard from the front brakes during gradual release of the brake pedal. These noises may be due to the brake friction material generating vibrations with the drum or rotor.

ACTION:
Replace either the suspect front brake pads or rear brake shoes, or both. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

NOTE:
THESE NOISE CONDITIONS SHOULD NOT BE CONFUSED WITH INTERMITTENT SQUEALS AND GROANS THAT ARE USUALLY HEARD DURING THE FIRST FEW BRAKE APPLICATIONS IN THE MORNING OR WHILE BRAKING IN REVERSE.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Verify brake noise is coming from the front or rear brakes.

2. If the noise is coming from the rear brakes:

a. Lightly machine the rear drums using a slow feed rate to obtain the highest quality finish on the brake drum surface. Make sure brake drums are within specification after the material is removed. All brake drum information can be found in the appropriate Villager Service Manual, Section 06.

b. Install the revised Rear Brake Shoes (F7XZ-2200-AA). Refer to the appropriate Villager Service Manual, Section 06, for brake shoe adjustment procedure.

NOTE:
THE REAR BRAKE SHOES DO NOT NEED MANUAL ADJUSTMENT.

3. If the noise is coming from the front brakes and the vehicle was built before 9/18/95:

a. Resurface both front rotors using the on-vehicle brake lathe to remove lining transfer deposits.

b. Install revised Front Brake Pads (F6XZ-2001-CA).
