ISSUE
A "hissing" or "fluttering" noise may be heard from the engine compartment on some vehicles. This may be caused by a broken exhaust manifold-to-cylinder head attaching bolt.
ACTION
Replace all exhaust manifold bolts with new bolts. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Verify noise is due to a broken exhaust manifold-to-cylinder head attaching bolt(s).
2. Remove both the LH and RH exhaust manifolds. Refer to Section 03-01 of the appropriate Villager Service Manual.
3. Replace all broken and remaining exhaust manifold-to-cylinder head attaching bolts (12 total). If bolt is broken off flush and cannot be accessed to drill out due to its location, proceed to Cylinder Head Removal Procedure below.
NOTE
INSPECT THE EXHAUST MANIFOLDS FOR CRACKS, DAMAGED SEALING SURFACES OR OTHER DAMAGE THAT WOULD MAKE THEM UNFIT FOR SERVICE. WARPED OR CRACKED MANIFOLDS MUST BE REPLACED.
4. Reinstall both exhaust manifolds. Refer to Section 03-01 of the Service Manual for details.
5. Verify the repair.
CYLINDER HEAD REMOVAL PROCEDURE (if required)

NOTE
INSPECT THE EXHAUST MANIFOLDS FOR CRACKS, DAMAGED SEALING SURFACES OR OTHER DAMAGE THAT WOULD MAKE THEM UNFIT FOR SERVICE. WARPED OR CRACKED MANIFOLDS MUST BE REPLACED.
3. Reinstall the cylinder head. Refer to Section 03-01 of the Service Manual for details.
