Rear Suspension - Clunking/Thumping Noise

This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to correct the service part numbers.

ISSUE:
A "clunking" or "thumping" noise may be heard from the rear of the vehicle while driving over bumps. This may result from improperly calibrated rear shock absorbers.

ACTION:
Replace the rear shock absorbers with redesigned shocks having revised valve calibration. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

REMOVAL

1. Raise and support the vehicle.





2. Remove the lower shock absorber nut and washer and swing the lower end free of the mounting stud on the axle housing, Figure 1.

NOTE:
THE ILLUSTRATION SHOWS THE WHEEL AND TIRE ASSEMBLY, HUB/BEARING ASSEMBLY, BRAKE BACKING PLATE AND SPINDLE REMOVED FOR CLARITY.





3. Remove the upper shock absorber nut and washer and remove the shock absorber, Figure 2.

INSTALLATION

To install, reverse the Removal Procedure. Install Shock Absorber F7XZ-18125-BA (standard) or F7XZ-18125-AB (heavy duty) and tighten the upper and lower shock absorber nuts to 30-41 N.m (22-30 lb-ft).
