Drive Axles, Bearings and Joints: Service and Repair
DISASSEMBLY1. Using Boot Clamp Pliers tool No. D87P-1090-A or equivalent, remove boot clamps on inboard CV joint boot. Discard boot clamps.
2. Slide outer race off halfshaft.
3. Clean grease out of inboard CV joint boot and outer race.
4. Clamp halfshaft in vise, then remove dust shield from the joint shaft, using a dull punch and hammer. When removing the dust shield, insert the blade of a screwdriver in as far as it will go to prevent damaging the dust shield.
5. Using a screwdriver to gently pry the dust shield away from the halfshaft support bearing. Remove the dust shield from the joint shaft.
6. Use snap ring pliers to remove the large snap ring.
7. Using a press, press the halfshaft support bearing retainer off of the joint shaft.
8. Using snap ring pliers to remove the large snap ring from the halfshaft support bearing.
9. Push the halfshaft support bearing out of the halfshaft support bearing retainer.
ASSEMBLY
1. Using a soft faced hammer, install dust shield between halfshaft support bearing housing and outer race.
2. Install halfshaft support bearing in the halfshaft support bearing retainer.
3. Using snap ring pliers, seat large snap ring on halfshaft support bearing retainer.
4. Using a press, install halfshaft support bearing retainer on joint shaft.
5. Seat snap ring into halfshaft support bearing.
6. Using a soft faced hammer, gently tap the dust shield onto the halfshaft support bearing. When installing the dust shield onto joint shaft, use caution as not to install it too far on shaft.
7. Using a soft faced hammer, gently tap dust shield on joint shaft.
8. Install outer race on halfshaft, the fill inboard CV joint boot with 7.41-8.29 ounces of High-Temp Constant Velocity Joint Grease part No. E43Z-19590-A (ESP-M1C207-A). Position boot on inboard CV joint assembly. Ensure that the boot is fully seated in the shaft grooves and the outer race.
9. Insert a dulled screwdriver between boot and outer race to allow trapped air to escape.
10. Position new boot clamps on inboard CV joint boot.
11. Using Boot Clamp Pliers tool No. D87P-1090-A or equivalent, install two new boot clamps around boots in a clockwise direction. Tighten boot clamps securely, but not to the point where the boot clamp bridge is cut or damage to boot could occur.
