Fail Safe Operation

Fail Safe Control Chart.:

The 4F2OE automatic transaxle is equipped with a fail safe control system. If the vehicle sustains damage to one of the components listed in the Fail safe Control Chart, fail safe is activated. The fail safe action is controlled by the Transaxle Control Module (TCM). Fail safe operation can be detected by observing the O/D OFF lamp. The O/D OFF lamp will blink for approximately 8 seconds when the key is turned ON.

NOTE: Fail safe may be activated even if all electrical circuits are undamaged. An example of this condition is excessive wheel spin. If this occurs the vehicle will be placed in 3rd gear and remain in 3rd until the key is cycled. Once the key is cycled, the fail safe action will be deactivated and the vehicle will return to it's normal shift pattern.

If there is no fault visually detected, refer to the Automatic Transaxle Flow of Diagnosis Flowchart for diagnosis of the 4F2OE automatic transaxle. Refer to the Switch Monitor Test and Quick Test procedures.
