Component Tests
1. With the engine off, pump the brake pedal several times to deplete the vacuum reserve in the power brake booster.2. Install Rotunda Brake Pedal Effort Gauge 021-00001 or equivalent.
3. Press on the brake pedal with a force of about 490 N (110 lb) and measure the brake pedal height.
- If brake pedal travel is greater than 95mm (about 3-3/4 inches), bleed the brakes and recheck brake pedal travel.
- If the brake pedal is still believed to be bottoming out, brake pedal reserve can be confirmed as follows:
a. Press the brake pedal with moderate to severe pressure and note the amount of brake pedal travel.
NOTE: The brake system is a diagonally split system. Therefore, open the bleeder screws at either the right front disc brake caliper and left rear wheel cylinder or at the left front disc brake caliper and right rear wheel cylinder.
b. Open a bleeder screw at one front disc brake caliper and the diagonal rear wheel cylinder. Press the brake pedal and note the amount of brake pedal travel. The brake pedal should go to the floor.
c. Close the bleeder screws and refer to Diagnosis by Symptom for causes of excessive brake pedal travel. Symptom Related Diagnostic Procedures
