EXHAUST SYSTEM - OBJECTIONABLE ODOR -
SULFUR SMELL - 3.0L ENGINE - VEHICLES BUILT

LIGHT TRUCK:
1994-95 VILLAGER
ISSUE:
An objectionable exhaust, sulfur or rotten egg odor may be noticed during various driving conditions. This is caused by the calibration of the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
ACTION:
Replace the PCM. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Remove the PCM by referring to the appropriate year Villager Service Manual, Page 03-14-4.
2. Install the revised PCM (F4XZ-12A650-HA) by referring to the appropriate year Villager Service Manual, Page 03-14-4.
3. With the engine coolant temperature above 6300 (1450), perform the following Self-Learning Idle procedure:
NOTE:
THE SELF-LEARNING CONTROL AIR/FUEL MIXTURE IS THE AUTOMATIC COMPENSATION FOR THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE BASIC AND THEORETICAL AIR/FUEL MIXTURE RATIO, COMPUTED IN TERMS OF FUEL INJECTION DURATION. THE VALUE IS RETAINED IN THE PCM MEMORY.
a. Let the engine idle for 30 seconds or more.
b. Increase idle speed to 2000 rpms for 55-65 seconds and return to idle.
c. Repeat Steps 3a and 3b 15 times.
4. Using the New Generation Star (NGS) tester or Service Bay Diagnostic System (SBDS), check the Parameter Identification Data (PID) for the self-learning value The readings should be 100% +/- 1%.
Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal and list the date, dealer number, and summary of modifications performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
