Passive Restraint System

PASSIVE RESTRAINT SYSTEM
The passive restraint system controls the operation of the front seat shoulder strap carrier and the indicator warning functions. The LH front safety belt retractor and tongue and the RH front safety belt retractor and tongue are to be manually connected by the driver/passenger and should always be worn.

The passive restraint control module is mounted beneath the control console. The passive restraint control module receives inputs from the door latch switches, the front and rear shoulder strap switches, and the ignition switch. The front center safety belt retractors are located on the inboard side of the front seat. The front seat shoulder strap tracks are mounted to the center body pillar (B-pillar) and across the top of the front door opening.

When a front door is closed and the ignition switch is in the ON position, the door latch switch sends a signal to the passive restraint control module to operate the safety belt retractor motor. The front seat shoulder strap carrier then slides to the rear toward the center body pillar (B-pillar) until it reaches the rear shoulder strap switch, which cuts the current to stop the operation of the safety belt retractor motor.

When a front door is opened, the door latch switch sends a signal to the passive restraint control module to operate the safety belt retractor motor regardless of what position the ignition switch is in. The front seat shoulder strap carrier then slides forward to the front body pillar (A-pillar) until it reaches the front shoulder strap switch, which cuts the current to stop operation of the safety belt retractor motor.

PASSIVE RESTRAINT CONTROL MODULE

Passive Restraint System Inputs:

The following description applies to the operation of the passive restraint system. The provided chart indicates the system inputs and Pins necessary for the application to the driver and passenger side of the system.

To move the front seat shoulder strap carrier from the front body pillar (A-pillar) to the center body pillar (B-pillar) when the front door is closed (Pin 13 floating/not grounded) and the ignition switch is in the ON position (Pin 25 battery voltage), the passive restraint control module will check the rear shoulder strap switch (Pin 18).

If the rear shoulder strap switch is not activated (Pin 18 floating! not grounded) the passive restraint control module will apply power to the safety belt retractor motor. This will send the front seat shoulder strap carrier from the front body pillar (A-pillar) to the center body pillar (B-pillar) (Pins 2 and 17 battery voltage, Pins 3 and 4 grounded), until the rear shoulder strap switch is activated (Pin 18 grounded).

If the rear shoulder strap switch is activated (Pin 18 grounded), no action will occur.

To move the front seat shoulder strap carrier from the center body pillar (B-pillar) to the front body pillar (A-pillar) when the front door is opened (Pin 13 grounded) and the inertia fuel shutoff switch (IFS switch) is set (Pin 12 floating), the passive restraint control module will check the front shoulder strap switch (Pin 5).

If the front shoulder strap switch is not activated (Pin 5 floating), the passive restraint control module will apply power to the safety belt retractor motor. This will send the front seat shoulder strap carrier from the center body pillar (B-pillar) to the front body pillar (A-pillar) (Pins 3 and 4 high, Pins 2 and 17 grounded), until the front shoulder strap switch is activated (Pin 5 grounded).

If the front shoulder strap switch is activated (Pin 5 grounded), or the inertia fuel shutoff switch is tripped (Pin 12 grounded), no action will occur.

When the passive restraint control module determines a safety belt warning is required, the safety belt warning indicator lamp output (Pin 16) supplies a ground to the safety belt warning indicator lamp. This action activates the safety belt warning indicator lamp.

When the ignition switch is in the ON position (Pin 25 high), and both the LH and RH rear shoulder strap switch are not activated (Pin 18 or 21 floating/not grounded), the safety belt warning indicator lamp output is activated (Pin 16 grounded).

The safety belt warning indicator lamp is also activated when the ignition switch is in the ON position (Pin 25 battery voltage) and either of the shoulder belts are retracted in (Pin 14 or 15 floating/not grounded).

NOTE: The safety belt warning chime works with the safety belt warning indicator lamp.

When the passive restraint control module determines that a warning is required, the audible safety belt warning chime output (Pin 1) supplies a ground to the safety belt warning chime through the timer module.

When the ignition switch is in the ON position (Pin 25 battery voltage), and either the RH front center safety belt retractor or the LH front center safety belt retractor is retracted (Pin 14 or 15 floating/not grounded), the safety belt warning chime output is activated (Pin 1 grounded) for five seconds. If this output has been triggered and timed out, it can be triggered again by retracting in the other front center safety belt retractor (floating/grounding Pin 14 or 15).

The door latch switches are part of the LH front door latch and the RH front door latch. The door latch switches indicate whether either the LH front door or the RH front door is opened or closed for the passive restraint control module.

FRONT SHOULDER STRAP SWITCHES
Each front seat shoulder strap track contains a front shoulder strap switch located at the front body pillar (A-pillar) end of the front seat shoulder strap track and a rear shoulder strap switch located at the center body pillar (B-pillar) end of the front seat shoulder strap track. These switches indicate the position of the front seat shoulder strap carrier to the passive restraint control module.

PASSIVE RESTRAINT CARRIER LOCK
The passive restraint carrier lock is part of the front seat shoulder strap carrier, and is serviced as a part of the front seat shoulder strap track. The passive restraint carrier lock is the attachment point for the front seat shoulder strap. The passive restraint carrier lock contains an emergency release buckle for the front seat shoulder strap.

SAFETY BELT WARNING INDICATOR LAMP
The safety belt warning indicator lamp illuminates for four to eight seconds during prove out. The safety belt warning indicator lamp will remain illuminated until the LH and the RH front seat shoulder straps are fastened.

SAFETY BELT WARNING CHIME
The safety belt warning chime is mounted to the instrument panel directly behind the instrument cluster.

The safety belt warning chime sounds for four to eight seconds simultaneously with the illumination of the safety belt warning indicator lamp if the LH front seat shoulder strap and LH lap belt are not fastened when the ignition switch is turned to ON. However, if the LH front seat shoulder strap and LH lap belt are fastened prior to placing the ignition switch in the ON position, the safety belt warning chime is canceled. The safety belt warning indicator lamp remains illuminated until the LH front seat shoulder strap is fastened.

Driver Side Inside Visor:

Passenger Side Inside Visor:

SAFETY LABELS
The safety labels for owner information are located on each inside visor. A small outer label is in view when each inside visor is in a horizontal position; a larger inner label is in view when each inside visor is pulled down into a vertical position.

FASTENING, SAFETY BELT
The front seat shoulder strap should remain fastened at all times; it is not necessary to unfasten the front seat shoulder strap to enter or exit the vehicle. The passive restraint carrier lock has an emergency release buckle for emergency use only. The front seat shoulder strap is fastened to the passive restraint carrier lock by inserting the front seat shoulder strap tongue into the passive restraint carrier lock until it clicks and is securely locked in place. The front seat shoulder strap should not be twisted when the front seat shoulder strap tongue is inserted into the passive restraint carrier lock at the front body pillar (A-pillar).

UNFASTENING, SAFETY BELT
The front seat shoulder strap should remain fastened at all times, it is not necessary to unfasten the front seat shoulder strap to enter or exit the vehicle. The passive restraint carrier lock has an emergency release buckle for emergency use only.

MANUAL OVERRIDE SYSTEM
If a malfunction of the passive restraint system occurs, the system can be operated manually by turning a thumb wheel on top of the safety belt retractor motor. The thumb wheel is accessed by removing the cover cap on the center body pillar inside lower finish panel at the center body pillar.

EMERGENCY RELEASE BUCKLE
If the front seat shoulder strap locks up in an accident, it may stay locked. To unlock the front seat shoulder strap, press the emergency release buckle on the passive restraint carrier lock. This allows the tongue to unlatch from the passive restraint carrier lock.

With the ignition switch in the ON position and the doors closed, the safety belt warning indicator lamp will remain illuminated if the front seat shoulder strap is detached from the passive restraint carrier lock. The safety belt warning chime will sound for about six seconds.
