System Flushing
CAUTION: When performing this procedure, Do not hold the steering wheel against a stop for over 10 seconds or damage to the steering system will result.
NOTE: If the power steering pump has been replaced or overhauled, flush the steering gear and lines before the vehicle is put into service. To remove possible contamination from the gear and lines, proceed as follows:
1. Remove and flush the power steering pressure hose. After flushing, install hose.
2. Place the fluid return line from the gear in a suitable container, then plug the reservoir return line fitting at the reservoir.
3. Fill the reservoir with Ford Premium Power Steering Fluid part No. E6AZ-19582-AA or equivalent.
4. Disconnect wiring harness electrical connector from ignition coil assembly.
5. Raise and support the front of the vehicle.
6. Add approximately 1.26 quarts of fluid to the power steering fluid reservoir while cranking the engine with the starter and turning the steering wheel from left to right.
CAUTION: Do not engage the starter for more than 10 seconds at a time, or possible damage to the starter motor may result. Allow starter motor to cool approximately 20 seconds between engagements.
7. Remove plug from power steering reservoir return fitting, then connect line to reservoir.
8. Fill power steering fluid reservoir to specified level.
9. Crank engine with starter motor and add fluid until level remains constant. Turn steering wheel from stop to stop while cranking engine.
10. Recheck fluid level, add as necessary.
11. Lower vehicle, then reconnect ignition coil connector.
12. Start engine and allow to reach operating temperature, then rotate steering wheel from left to right several times.
13. Stop engine, then recheck fluid level. Add fluid if necessary.
