Flushing

If the power steering pump has been replaced or overhauled, flush the steering gear and lines before the vehicle is returned to service. To remove possible contamination from the gear and lines, perform the following procedure:
1. Remove and flush the power steering pressure hose. After flushing, install the power steering pressure hose.
2. Place the reservoir return hose from the power steering oil cooler tube in a suitable container and plug the power steering oil reservoir.
3. Fill the power steering oil reservoir with Ford Premium Power Steering Fluid E6AZ-19582-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESW-M2C33-F.
4. Disconnect the ignition coil electrical connector.
5. Raise and support the front wheels.
6. Add approximately 1.2 liters (1.3 quarts) of fluid to the power steering oil reservoir while cranking the engine with the starter motor and turning the steering wheel from left to right.

CAUTION: Do not hold the steering wheel against a stop for over 15 seconds. Damage to the steering system could result.

7. When all the fluid has been added, stop cranking the engine.
8. Remove the plug from the power steering oil reservoir and attach the reservoir return hose to the power steering oil reservoir.
9. Fill the power steering oil reservoir to the specified level.
10. Crank the engine with the starter and add fluid until the level remains constant.
11. While cranking the engine, turn the wheels from stop-to-stop.

CAUTION: Do not hold the steering wheel against a stop for over 15 seconds. Damage to the steering system could result.

12. Check the fluid level again and add fluid if necessary.
13. Connect the ignition coil electrical connector.
14. Start the engine and allow it to run for several minutes.
15. Rotate the steering wheel from far left to far right several times.

CAUTION: Do not hold the steering wheel against a stop for over 15 seconds. Damage to the steering system could result.

16. Turn off the engine and check the fluid level. Add fluid if necessary.
17. Lower the vehicle.
