Removal and Replacement

REMOVAL
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove starter motor.
3. Disconnect Manual Lever Position (MLP) switch electrical connector from transaxle.






4. Disconnect electrical connectors mounted on electrical connector retaining brackets.
5. Remove bolt from each of the two electrical connector retaining brackets.
6. Remove upper and lower oil level indicator bolts and the oil level indicator.
7. Remove upper transaxle to engine retaining bolts.
8. Raise and support vehicle.






9. Remove LH inner engine and transaxle splash shield bolts and screw, then the splash shield.
10. Remove front wheel driveshaft and joints.
11. Drain transaxle fluid into suitable container.
12. Remove converter inlet pipe to exhaust bracket bolt.
13. Remove exhaust bracket from transaxle.
14. Remove rear transaxle to engine brace.
15. Remove front transaxle to engine brace.
16. Remove transaxle to engine bolt.
17. Remove two exhaust bracket to transaxle studs and the inspection plate.






18. Remove transaxle shift cable nut and transaxle shift cable from MLP switch.

Transaxle Shift Cable:






19. Use screwdriver to release transaxle shift cable locking pin from transaxle shift cable bracket, then remove shift cable and bracket.
20. Disconnect valve body wiring harness electrical connector.
21. Disconnect transaxle ground from transaxle.
22. Disconnect MLP switch electrical connector.
23. Remove Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) and VSS hold-down bracket.
24. Disconnect transaxle breather tube from transaxle breather.
25. Place socket on crankshaft pulley bolt to prevent crankshaft from rotating, then remove four torque converter to flex plate bolts.
26. Place suitable transaxle jack under transaxle and secure transaxle to jack.

Rear RH Transaxle Support Bracket:






27. Remove RH rear transaxle support insulator from RH rear transaxle support bracket.
28. Remove front transaxle support insulator from vehicle.
29. Use pliers to slide transaxle oil cooler tube hose clamps away from transaxle.
30. Disconnect transaxle oil cooler tubes from transaxle. Plug oil cooler tubes.
31. Carefully separate transaxle from engine and lower transaxle from vehicle.

INSTALLATION
1. Secure transaxle to transaxle jack.
2. Raise transaxle into engine compartment and align transaxle to engine. Ensure alignment dowels are properly positioned.
3. Install transaxle to engine bolt and torque to 22-30 ft lbs.
4. Install rear transaxle support insulator, as shown in the Rear RH Transaxle Support Bracket image. Torque retaining nuts and through bolt to 32-41 ft lbs.
5. Install front transaxle support insulator, torque insulator retaining bolts to 32- 41 ft lbs and through bolt to 47-54 ft lbs.
6. Install torque converter flex plate. Torque retaining bolts to 33-43 ft lbs.
7. Install transaxle oil cooler tubes and position oil cooler tube hose clamps.
8. Connect transaxle breather tube to transaxle breather.
9. Install VSS and VSS hold-down bracket, torque bracket bolt to 44-61 in lbs.
10. Align shift cable and bracket, then tighten transaxle shift cable nut, as shown in the Transaxle Shift Cable Adjustment image.
11. Connect transaxle ground.
12. Align inspection plate and install exhaust bracket to transaxle studs.
13. Install rear transaxle to engine brace, torque retaining bolts to 22-30 ft lbs.
14. Install front transaxle to engine brace, torque retaining bolts to 22-30 ft lbs.
15. Install exhaust bracket to transaxle, torque retaining nuts to 22-30 ft lbs.
16. Install and tighten converter inlet pipe to exhaust bracket bolt, torque to 32 ft lbs.
17. Connect MLP switch electrical connector.
18. Connect valve body wiring harness electrical connector.
19. Install front wheel driveshaft and joints.
20. Install LH inner engine and transaxle splash shield, then lower vehicle.
21. Install upper transaxle to engine bolts, torque to 29-36 ft lbs.
22. Install oil level indicator.
23. Install electrical connector retaining brackets, then connect electrical connectors on retaining brackets.
24. Connect Park Neutral Position (PNP) switch electrical connector.
25. Install starter motor.
26. Connect battery ground cable.
27. Fill transaxle with appropriate fluid to proper level.
