Retrieving/Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's)

NOTE: Ford DOES NOT provide procedures other than those described to retrieve or clear trouble codes.

ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTICS
When the anti-lock brake system (ABS) is operating normally, the anti-lock brake warning indicator will illuminate for approximately three seconds when the key is turned ON or when the engine starts. If the anti-lock brake warning indicator stays on for more than three seconds after the engine starts or illuminates while driving, a malfunction has occurred in the ABS. The ABS trouble codes are stored in the anti-lock brake control module. Up to three codes can be stored in the anti-lock brake control module and they are kept in memory until they are erased. The ABS trouble codes are retrieved through the anti-lock brake warning indicator. This is an amber warning light located on the instrument cluster. The ABS trouble codes may indicate different failures. Diagnostic Trouble Code Descriptions

DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES, RETRIEVING Testing and Inspection

Interior Fuse Junction Panel:

ABS Warning Indicator Blinking Pattern:

- Key OFF.
- Ground the data link connector Pin 4 to initiate the Quick Test.
- Key ON and wait approximately 3.0 seconds.
- The anti-lock brake system (ABS) trouble codes will begin to flash on the anti-lock brake warning indicator.

The first code will be the start code of 12 and will repeat three times. The next ABS trouble code will be the latest ABS trouble code to occur and will repeat three times before flashing the next code. After all codes have been retrieved, the codes will repeat beginning with the start code. If no ABS trouble codes are registered, the start code (12) will repeat continuously.

DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES, ERASING

Erasing Diagnostic Trouble Codes:

After all codes have been retrieved, with the key still ON, disconnect the jumper connected between the data link connector and ground. Ground Pin 4 of the data link connector three times within 10 seconds, leaving it grounded for more than one second each time.

After the codes have been erased, perform the Quick Test again to verify that all codes have been erased. Quick Tests
