Cruise Control: Service Precautions

The back-up power supply must be disconnected before any air bag component, or steering column equipped with an air bag, is serviced. The air bag system back-up power supply is combined into the diagnostic monitor assembly as a complete assembly to provide deployment power if the battery or battery cables become damaged during an accident. The back-up power supply will deplete its stored energy approximately ten minutes after the battery is disconnected.

NOTE: Prior to disconnecting battery, record pre-set radio frequencies.

DISARMING
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Wait at least 10 minutes for air bag diagnostic monitor backup power supply to deplete.
3. Remove cover panel at lower portion of steering wheel to access driver's air bag electrical connector.
4. Disconnect driver's air bag electrical connector.
5. Connect Air Bag Simulator T94P-50-A, or equivalent, to driver's air bag module vehicle harness connector.
6. Disconnect passenger's air bag module electrical connector. The connector is located behind the glove compartment.
7. Connect a second air bag simulator to passenger's air bag module vehicle harness connector.
8. Connect battery ground cable.

ARMING
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Wait at least 10 minutes for air bag diagnostic monitor backup power supply to deplete.
3. Remove air bag simulator from driver's air bag connector.
4. Connect driver's air bag connector to driver's air bag module, then install module on steering wheel.
5. Remove air bag simulator from passenger's air bag module connector.
6. Connect passenger's air bag module connector.
7. Connect battery ground cable.
8. Prove out system as follows:
a. Cycle ignition switch from OFF to RUN and visually monitor air bag indicator.
b. Air bag indicator should light continuously for approximately seven seconds, then go out.

NOTE: After the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, abnormal drive conditions may be present while the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 10 or more miles to relearn the strategy.
