Displaying & Reading Trouble Codes
Fault codes are read by using the air bag warning indicator in the instrument cluster. There are three different self-diagnosis modes:- User Mode.
- Diagnosis Mode (Self-Diagnosis Result 1).
The LH front door courtesy lamp switch and ignition switch are used to alternate from one mode to another.
Possible Self-Diagnosis Results:
USER MODE
When the air bag system is functioning normally, the air bag warning indicator will illuminate for approximately 7 seconds when the ignition switch is placed in the ON or START positions, then it goes out.
If a fault occurs in the air bag system, the air bag warning indicator will illuminate for approximately 7 seconds when the ignition switch is placed in the ON or START positions, then begin to flash continuously. To determine the specific fault, enter the Diagnosis Mode.
If the air bag module has been deployed or a fault in the air bag diagnostic monitor exists, the air bag warning indicator will illuminate continuously while the ignition switch is in the ON position. Refer to the Continuous Air Bag Warning Indicator Pinpoint Test when this occurs.
Possible Self-Diagnostic Results:
DIAGNOSIS MODE
The Diagnosis Mode will display any fault that is present in the system.
To enter the Diagnosis Mode:
- Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
- Press and release the LH front door courtesy lamp switch more than five times within seven seconds after the ignition switch has been turned ON.
If a fault presently exists in the system, the fault code will be displayed by a flashing sequence of the air bag warning indicator. The first flash after the seven second prove out will be the start signal. After the start signal is displayed, the fault code will begin to flash. The number of flashes of the air bag warning indicator will determine the fault that exists. The start signal and the fault code will continuously repeat. Refer to the Fault Code Table for fault code description. After repairing the vehicle, always return the air bag system to the User Mode.
How To Alternate Self-Diagnosis Modes:
To return to the User Mode:
- Turn the ignition switch OFF and then back ON.
- Press and release the LH front door courtesy lamp switch more than five times within seven seconds after the ignition switch has been turned ON.
If the fault is intermittent or no fault is detected in the system, the air bag warning indicator will continuously flash the start signal without flashing a fault code.
DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CLEARING
After the system has been repaired, return to the User Mode. Returning to the User Mode will automatically erase any codes from memory which have been resolved.
NOTE: You must return to User Mode when repairs have been completed to verify the system.
If the system is not completely repaired, the information stored in the air bag diagnostic monitor's memory will not be erased. If codes are still present, you must return to diagnostics to make additional repairs.
After the system has been repaired and returned to the User Mode, all fault codes will be erased from the air bag diagnostic monitor memory.
