Verify the Condition
The following procedures is the only approved way to test for the above condition.1. Turn vehicle OFF.
2. Confirm the New Generation STAR (NGS) Tester ROM update card is inserted into the back of the control unit.
3. Connect the Data Link Connector (DLC) adapter to the NGS Tester.
4. Connect the power cable connector to the DLC adapter cable.
5. Connect the DLC adapter to the DLC connector. See Figure 1.
6. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
7. Select the appropriate year for the vehicle being tested.
8. Select the correct vehicle from the vehicle selection screen.
9. Select Diagnostic Data Link from the Main Menu screen.
10. Select PCM - Powertrain CTRL Module from the System selection screen.
11. Select Active Command Modes from the Diagnostic Test Modes screen.
12. Push the appropriate number button to shut down cylinder # 2.
13. Run power balance test with cylinder # 2 shut down.
14. Listen to the engine, did the knock from the engine become less noticeable.
15. Stop the power balance test on cylinder # 2.
16. Push the appropriate number button to shut down cylinder # 3.
17. Run power balance test with cylinder # 3 shut down.
18. Listen to the engine, did the knock from the engine become less noticeable.
19. Stop the power balance test on cylinder # 3.
20. Push the appropriate number button to shut down cylinder # 4.
21. Run power balance test with cylinder # 4 shut down.
22. Listen to the engine, did the knock from the engine become less noticeable.
23. Stop the power balance test on cylinder # 4.
24. If the noise diminishes, the engine must be replaced.
