Cruise Control: Description and Operation
The speed control system consists of:^ Speed control servo.
^ Speed control actuator.
^ Vehicle speed sensor.
^ Speed control actuator switch.
^ Brake pressure deactivate switch.
Speed Control Servo
The speed control servo converts an electronic signal into a constant speed. The servo is mounted to the RH fender.
Speed Control Switches
The speed control switches are mounted to the steering wheel. The speed control switch buttons are:
^ ON, OFF.
^ Resume Speed (RSM).
^ Set speed (SET), Accelerate (ACCEL).
^ COAST.
Speed Control Indicator Light
The speed control indicator light is located on the instrument cluster above the speedometer, and illuminates when the speed control SET switch is depressed during driving.
The light automatically goes off when brakes are applied or when the system is turned OFF.
Brake ON/OFF (BOO) Switch
The brake ON/OFF switch is located above the brake pedal. When the brakes are applied, the switch sends an electrical signal to the speed control servo, which disengages the speed control system if it is being used.
Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)
The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) is a magnetic pickup-driven gear mounted to and driven by the transmission on 4x2 models, and to the transfer case on 4x4 models.
The VSS sends a signal to the speed control servo indicating how fast the vehicle is traveling.
Air Bag Sliding Contact
The air bag sliding contact is located behind the driver side air bag module on the steering wheel, and transfers electrical signals from the steering column wiring to the speed control actuator switches.
Speed Control Actuator Cable
The speed control actuator cable connects the speed control servo to the throttle body.
Deactivator Switch
The deactivator switch is an additional safety feature that will turn the speed control system off under increased brake pedal pressure if the Brake On/Off (BOO) switch has not reacted.
The deactivator switch is mounted to the front of the break master cylinder.
