Draining and Filling
WARNING: DO NOT OPEN THE COOLING SYSTEM WHILE IT IS HOT OR ENGINE IS RUNNING.CAUTION: Coolant must be recovered in a suitable clean container for reuse. If coolant is contaminated it must be recycled or disposed of properly.
NOTE: About 80% of the coolant capacity can be recovered with the engine in the vehicle. Dirty, rusty or contaminated coolant requires replacement.
1. Release pressure in the cooling system by slowly turning the radiator cap one half to one turn counterclockwise to the first step on the filler neck. When the pressure has been released, remove the radiator cap.
2. Place a suitable container below the radiator draincock.
3. Install a 3/8 i.d. hose to the draincock adapter and open the radiator draincock.
4. Raise and the support vehicle.
5. Remove the engine block coolant drain plug.
a. Place a suitable container below the engine block coolant drain plug.
b. Remove the engine block coolant drain plug.
WARNING: DO NOT STAND IN LINE WITH OR NEAR RADIATOR FAN BLADE WHEN ENGINE IS RUNNING. USE CAUTION WHEN ADDING COOLANT MIXTURE TO RADIATOR TO AVOID HOT COOLANT OR STEAM BLOW OUT FROM THE RADIATOR. DO NOT OPEN COOLING SYSTEM WHILE IT IS HOT OR THE ENGINE IS RUNNING.
NOTE: When filling a crossflow radiator, allow time for the coolant to flow through the radiator tubes to fill both tanks. Use the following steps to remove air from the cooling system and to insure that filling procedure is complete.
6. Install the engine block drain plug.
7. Close the radiator draincock and lower the vehicle.
8. Add the proper coolant mixture (50-50 mix) to the radiator and radiator coolant recovery reservoir.
9. Install the radiator cap.
10. Move the temperature blend selector to the full warm position.
11. Start and run the engine until it reaches operating temperature.
^ Recheck coolant levels and adjust as needed.
^ Inspect vehicle for coolant leaks.
WARNING: DO NOT OPEN COOLING SYSTEM WHILE IT IS HOT OR THE ENGINE IS RUNNING.
