Displaying and Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes
NOTE: Ford DOES NOT provide a procedure to retrieve or clear trouble codes. Code retrieval is integrated into the EATC Module Self-Test. Ford DOES NOT provide an alternate procedure for performing the Self-Test with an NGS or generic tester tester.1. Perform Electronic Automatic Temperature Control (EATC) system check.
1 Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position with the EATC on, simultaneously press and release the OFF and FLOOR buttons, and within two seconds press the AUTOMATIC button. The test may take as long as 30 seconds to complete. When the self-test is complete, Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) found during self-test will be displayed in the Vacuum Fluorescent Display (VFD) window. DTCs will also be listed for intermittent faults found during system operation. Record all DTCs. Press the blue (cooler) button to exit the self-test.
2 If DTC 888 is not displayed, refer to the Symptom Chart. Electronic Climate Control
Perform the necessary diagnosis and repair or replace the component(s) in question.
3 If DTC 888 is displayed, go to the next step.
2. Check blower manual override low speed operation.
1 Fully rotate the EATC blower thumbwheel down to the stop.
2 If the blower motor switches to low speed, go to the next step.
3 If the blower motor does not switch to low speed, return to the pinpoint test. Pinpoint Tests Electronic Climate Control
3. Check blower manual override high speed operation.
1 Fully rotate the EATC blower thumbwheel up to the stop.
2 If the blower motor switches to high speed, go to the next step.
3 If the blower motor does not switch to high speed, return to the pinpoint test. Pinpoint Tests Electronic Climate Control
4. Check defrost override operation.
1 Press the DEF button and check system discharge airflow. Airflow should be from the windshield defroster nozzle and the A/C side window demisters. Check to insure that the heater and A/C air inlet duct door is in the outside position.
2 If airflow is discharged properly from the ducts, go to the next step.
3 If airflow is not properly discharged from the ducts, go to Pinpoint Test K. K: Improper/Erratic Direction of Air Flow From Outlet(s)
5. Check floor override operation.
1 Press the FLOOR button and check system discharge airflow. Discharge airflow should be from the heater floor duct.
2 If airflow is properly discharged from the heater floor duct, go to the next step.
3 If airflow is not properly discharged from the heater floor duct, go to Pinpoint Test K. K: Improper/Erratic Direction of Air Flow From Outlet(s)
6. Check vent override operation.
1 Press the VENT button and check system discharge airflow. Discharge airflow should be from the A/C registers.
2 If airflow is discharged from the A/C registers, go to the next step.
3 If airflow is not properly discharged from the A/C registers, go to Pinpoint Test K. K: Improper/Erratic Direction of Air Flow From Outlet(s)
7. Check MAX A/C operation.
1 With the ambient temperature above 4°C (40°F), press the MAX A/C button. Check the heater and A/C air inlet duct door for positioning in the recirculate (closed to outside air) position. If the air door is in the recirculate position, go to the next step.
2 If the air inlet door is not in the recirculate position, go to Pinpoint Test K. K: Improper/Erratic Direction of Air Flow From Outlet(s)
8. Check clutch engagement in the vent mode.
1 Press the VENT button. "VENT" should be displayed and the A/C clutch should not engage.
2 If" VENT" is displayed and the A/C clutch did not engage, go to the next step.
3 If "VENT" is displayed and the A/C clutch did engage, REPLACE the EATC.
9. Check MAX A/C operation.
1 Press the MAX A/C button. "MAX A/C" should be displayed and the A/C clutch should engage for A/C compressor operation.
2 If "MAX A/C" is displayed and the A/C clutch did engage, go to the next step.
3 If "MAX A/C" is displayed and the A/C clutch did not engage, RETURN to the pinpoint test. Pinpoint Tests Electronic Climate Control
10. Check AUTOMATIC operation.
1 Press the AUTOMATIC button. The selected temperature and "AUTOMATIC" should be displayed.
2 If the selected temperature and "AUTOMATIC" are displayed, the test is complete.
3 If the selected temperature and "AUTOMATIC" are not displayed, refer to the Symptom Chart. Electronic Climate Control
