Sunroof / Moonroof: Description and Operation

The sliding roof panel system consists of these components:
- RH circuit breaker
- Timer module
- Power window relay
- Roof sliding panel switch
- Roof glass panel
- Sliding roof panel motor
- Halo moulding
- Roof sliding panel headlining
- Roof sliding panel slide links
- Roof sliding panel housing
- Roof air deflector
- Center green diode strip

The sliding roof panel, available as an option, is electrically operated by the roof sliding panel switch located in the overhead console.

The OPEN/DOWN side of the roof sliding panel switch operates as follows:
- Retracts the roof glass panel into the storage space between the headliner and the roof panel
- Returns the roof glass panel to the closed position from the vent position

The CLOSE/UP side of the roof sliding panel switch operates as follows:
- Moves the roof glass panel from the open position to the closed position
- Lifts the roof glass panel from the closed position to the vent position

With the roof glass panel in the closed position, pressing the CLOSE/UP side of the roof sliding panel switch causes the roof sliding panel slide links to raise the rear of the roof glass panel to the vent position. When the roof sliding panel switch is activated, a gear on the sliding roof panel motor drives a spline on the roof sliding panel housing. Within the roof sliding panel housing, the spline is connected to two sliding roof panel cables which cause the roof sliding panel slide links to slide and the roof glass panel to open or to close.

The sliding roof panel cables and the spline are part of the roof sliding panel housing. Neither the sliding roof panel motor nor the roof sliding panel housing can be disassembled. If a malfunction is detected with either of these assemblies, the assembly must be replaced.

The water drainage system incorporates the following arrangement. A drain trough encircles the roof sliding panel housing. Four sliding roof panel frame drain hoses are attached to the drain trough. One sliding roof panel frame drain hose is located at each corner of the trough.

The two front sliding roof panel frame drain hoses are routed down the front body-pillars and into the cowl sides to the rocker panels.

The two rear sliding roof panel frame drain hoses are routed down the C-pillars to the rocker panels. The LH rear sliding roof panel frame drain hose is routed in front of the rear LH wheel well. The RH rear sliding roof panel frame drain hose is routed behind the rear RH wheel well and is attached to the chassis by a rubber drain hose plug grommet.
