Cruise Control: Description and Operation

The speed control actuator is electronically controlled by the speed control amplifier and uses a speed control servo motor to position the speed control actuator cable. In turn, the position of the speed control actuator cable controls engine speed.

The speed control amplifier reads input from the powertrain control module to determine and maintain vehicle speed. By pressing the ON button of the speed control actuator switch, the speed control amplifier begins to monitor vehicle speed. When the vehicle speed is above 48 km/h (30mph), the speed control system is activated by pressing the COAST/SET button of the speed control actuator switch.

Once the system is activated, acceleration is achieved either by pressing the accelerator pedal or by pressing the RES/ACCEL button. The vehicle may be decelerated by pressing the COAST/SET button until the desired speed is reached. When the COAST/SET button is released, the vehicle will remain at that speed.

The speed control system is deactivated by doing one of the following:

^ Pressing the CANCEL button of the speed control actuator switch.
^ Depressing the brake pedal.
^ Placing the transaxle in neutral.
^ Pressing the OFF button of the speed control actuator switch.

If the OFF button of the speed control actuator switch has not been pressed, pressing the RES/ACCEL button will signal the speed control amplifier to adjust the speed of the vehicle to the previous speed.
