Coupler HVAC: Description and Operation

Spring lock couplings are used to connect A/C lines throughout the system. A spring lock coupling is a refrigerant line coupling held together by an A/C tube lock coupling spring inside a circular cage.

When the coupling is connected, the flared end of the female fitting slips behind the A/C tube lock coupling spring inside the cage of the male fitting. The A/C tube lock coupling spring and cage then prevent the flared end of the female fitting from pulling out of the cage.

Two O-rings are used to seal the coupling. These O-rings are made of special material and must be replaced with an 0-ring made of the same material. Use only O-rings listed in the master parts catalog for the spring lock coupling.

A plastic indicator ring is used with spring lock couplings to indicate that the coupling is connected. After performing service operations, insert the tabs of the indicator ring into the cage opening. When the coupling is connected, the indicator ring will snap out of the cage opening and remain on the refrigerant line.
