Daytime Running Lamp: Description and Operation

Vehicles sold in Canada are equipped with a Daytime Running Lamp (DRL) system. The DRL system consists of two parts; the DRL control module and the DRL cover. The DRL control module is mounted on the RH shock tower. The DRL cover clips over the DRL module, to provide splash protection. The DRL cover protects both the DRL control module and its electrical connectors. The DRL system is controlled by the DRL control module. An internal voltage dropping circuit within the DRL control module operates the headlamp high beam filament at reduced brightness. However, the "flash-to-pass" function still operates at full brightness. The high beam indicator does not light during operation of the DRL system. The DRL system will operate when all these conditions are met:
- The parking brake is not engaged
- The headlamp switch is OFF
- The engine is running
