Fuel Injector: Description and Operation

PURPOSE
To meter and control the amount of fuel flow to the combustion chambers.

OPERATION
The fuel injectors are electronically controlled solenoid valves that control fuel flow to the engine. The injectors are controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), the fuel pressure regulator, and the intake manifold vacuum. When the PCM sends a signal to the injector, the coil in the injector pulls a ball back and fuel is released into the intake manifold through the nozzle. The injected fuel is controlled by the PCM in terms of injection pulse duration. These injectors are side feed type injectors.
