Generator Circuit Description

GENERATOR CIRCUIT

The generator/regulator circuit consists of a:

^ Voltage regulator (Integrated Circuit [IC] type)
^ Generator rotor
^ Stator and coil
^ Various fuses
^ Charging system indicator
^ Ignition switch
^ Bridge type rectifier filter

BATTERY POSITIVE VOLTAGE (B+) OUTPUT

The B-terminal is connected internally to the rectifier output. Externally, the B-terminal wire is connected to the B-terminal and supplies generator direct current which is output to the electrical system to charge the battery and operate the electrical accessories while the engine is running.

'L' CIRCUIT

The L-terminal is connected internally to the voltage regulator which is an Integrated Circuit type. When the ignition switch is turned on, the voltage regulator energizes the generator rotor.

'S' CIRCUIT

The S-terminal is connected internally to the voltage regulator sensing circuit. Externally, the S-terminal is connected to the positive side of the battery. The 'S' circuit is used to tell the voltage regulator how much generator output is required.

The voltage regulator is not adjustable. The Integrated Circuit generator regulator automatically reduces regulated voltage when the ambient temperature increases, so that battery charging voltage is maintained at the proper level.

The voltage regulator senses the vehicle electrical system current demand and energizes the rotor field current accordingly. The voltage regulator also limits charging system voltage to an operating range of 14.1 to 14.7 volts.
