Exhaust System: Description and Operation

The exhaust system provides an exit to the atmosphere for exhaust gases. The exhaust system reduces engine noise as exhaust gases pass through the exhaust system components. A leaking or loose exhaust system will have an adverse effect on noise, exhaust gas emissions, engine operation, and driveability.

The exhaust system consists of:
^ Upstream Heated Oxygen Sensor (H02S).
^ Downstream heated oxygen sensor.
^ Exhaust inlet pipe/Warm-up Three Way Catalytic Converter (WU-TWC).
^ Three Way Catalytic Converter (TWC).
^ Intermediate pipe.
^ Muffler/resonator assembly.
^ Exhaust shields.
^ Exhaust hanger insulators.

The exhaust system flex tube includes a flex pipe, which is a pliable bellows tube shielded by a braided stainless steel sleeve. Both of the TWCs in the exhaust system reduce hydrocarbon emissions complying with the emission regulations enforced by government authorities.

Exhaust hanger insulators suspend the exhaust system by attaching to brackets mounted on the body. The exhaust hanger insulators mount to the muffler pipe bracket, and to hooks on the muffler/resonator assembly and the exhaust system flex tube.
