Transmission Position Sensor/Switch: Description and Operation
The Transmission Range (TR) switch is located on the front of the transaxle at the lower LH corner.
The Park/Neutral Position (PNP) circuit within the TR switch prevents accidental vehicle movement caused by engine cranking with the gearshift lever in the forward or reverse gears. The PNP circuit is wired in series with the inhibit relay and allows engine cranking only when the PNP circuit is closed (in the PARK [P] or NEUTRAL [N] positions).
The TR switch also signals to the Transmission Control Module (TCM) the transaxle gear position, for transaxle control purposes.
