Overdrive Switch: Description and Operation

The Overdrive (O/D) Control Switch is located in the end of the gearshift lever. The O/D control switch is a push button switch which is used to prevent the transaxle from shifting into fourth gear (overdrive). When the vehicle is operating with the gearshift lever in DRIVE (D), the transaxle will automatically shift into the appropriate gear (including overdrive). For slow speed driving (city traffic) or when additional engine braking is desirable (descending hills), the upshift into fourth gear can be prevented by pushing the O/D control switch. Push the O/D control switch again to re-enable the overdrive feature. When locked out of O/D, the O/D OFF indicator will illuminate.
