Steps 1 - 52
CAUTION: To align any chains you MUST use the special service tools. Ford does not provide timing marks or any additional information for repair or replacement of the timing chains without the special tools listed.

1. Remove the drive belt.
1 Rotate the drive belt tensioner counterclockwise.
2 Remove the drive belt.
2. Remove the bolt and the belt tensioner.
3. Remove the bolts and the engine accessory bracket.
4. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
5. Remove the bolts and the generator mounting bracket.
6. Disconnect the Throttle Position (TP) sensor electrical connector.
7. Disconnect the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve electrical connector.
8. Disconnect the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve vacuum hose.
9. Disconnect the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor electrical connector.
10. Disconnect the ignition coil electrical connector.
11. Disconnect the radio ignition interference capacitor electrical connector.
12. Disconnect the Engine Vacuum Regulator (EVR) and the IMTV electrical connectors.
13. Disconnect the Differential Pressure Feedback EGR (DPFE) transducer.
1 Disconnect the electrical connector.
2 Disconnect the vacuum hoses.
14. Disconnect the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor electrical connector.
15. CAUTION: Spark plug wires must be connected correctly. Mark the spark plug wires before removing them.
Using the special tool, remove the spark plug wires from the spark plugs.
16. Disconnect the vacuum hose on the RH upper intake manifold.
17. Disconnect the crankcase ventilation hose.
18. Remove the bolts retaining the upper intake manifold.
19. Disconnect the RH Vapor Management Valve (VMV) hose.
20. Disconnect the LH VMV hose and remove the upper intake manifold.
21. Remove the bolts and the lower intake manifold.
22. Disconnect the water temperature indicator sender unit and the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECT sensor).
23. Disconnect the knock sensor (KS) electrical connector.
24. NOTE: LH side shown, RH side similar.
Disconnect the six fuel injector electrical connectors.
25. Remove the fuel charging wiring.
26. Disconnect the EGR valve to exhaust manifold tube from the EGR valve.
27. Disconnect the EGR valve to exhaust manifold tube from the exhaust manifold.
28. Remove the bolt and position the lower fuel line bracket aside.
29. Remove the bolts and the fuel injection supply manifold.
30. Remove the bolts and the LH valve cover.
31. Remove the transmission fill tube and the bracket.
32. Remove the bolts and the RH valve cover.
33. Remove the fuel injectors.
34. Remove the nut and position the VMV hose bracket aside.
35. Disconnect the water bypass hose.
36. Remove the bolts and the thermostat housing.
37. Remove the crankcase vent separator spring steel clip and remove the separator.
38. Remove the bolt and the oil level indicator tube.
39. Remove the bolt and the knock sensor.
40. Remove the nuts and the RH exhaust manifold.
41. Remove the nuts and the LH exhaust manifold.
42. Remove the bolt.
43. Install the Crankshaft Damper Remover Tool and remove the crankshaft damper.
44. Remove the RH hydraulic chain tensioner.
45. CAUTION: The right-hand camshaft sprocket bolt is a left-hand threaded bolt.
Remove the bolt.
46. Install a rubber band on the cassette to hold the chain and camshaft sprocket in place.
47. Remove the bolt.
48. Remove the LH hydraulic chain tensioner.
49. Remove the bolt.
50. Install a rubber band on the cassette to hold the chain and camshaft sprocket in place.
51. Remove the bolt.
52. Remove the eight 12 mm bolts and two 8 mm bolts in sequence and remove the LH cylinder head.
