Subject:
DEMONSTRATION/DELIVERY HOLD: Safety Recall 99S16 - Certain 1999 Explorer and Mountaineer Vehicles - Brake Line Repair

AFFECTED VEHICLES
Certain 1999 Explorer and Mountaineer vehicles built at the Louisville Assembly Plant from April 16, 1999 through May 3, 1999 and certain 1999 Explorer vehicles built at the St. Louis Assembly Plant from April 23, 1999 through May 3, 1999.

REASON FOR RECALL
In some of the affected vehicles, the right front brake line to the hydraulic control unit connection may separate causing the line to leak when the brake pedal is applied. A separated line would cause a loss of brake pressure to the front brakes, resulting in increased stopping distance. The rear brakes are not affected.

SERVICE ACTION
Before demonstrating or delivering any of the vehicles involved in this recall, the dealer must repair the right front brake line fitting located on the Antilock Brake System (ABS) Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU) on all of the affected vehicles. Additionally, the dealer will perform this recall procedure on all affected vehicles that have been delivered to customers.

PARTS AVAILABILITY
Repair parts will be available for ordering beginning May 11, 1999.
