Engine Lubrication: Description and Operation

Engine Lubrication System:

The engine lubrication system is the force-feed type in which oil is supplied to these components:
^ crankshaft
^ connecting rod
^ valve lappets.
^ camshaft bearings

From the valve tappets, a controlled volume of oil is supplied to the rocker arms through hollow push rods. All other moving parts are lubricated by gravity flow or splash.

The lubrication system consists of a full-pressure, cast-iron pump driven by the oil pump intermediate shaft from the camshaft synchronizer. The oil pressure is controlled by a relief valve.

The oil pan acts as a reservoir, holding the oil that is pumped through the engine by the oil pump after startup.
