Differential

Special Tools:

Disassembly





1. Clamp the differential in a soft-jawed vise.

2. NOTE: Do not remove the final drive gear unless it must be replaced.

NOTE: Mark the final drive gear prior to removal to ensure that it is installed in the same position.





If the final drive gear shows signs of excessive wear or damage, remove the final drive gear.
1 Mark the final drive gear for installation.
2 Remove the bolts.
3 Remove the gear.





3. Using the special tool, remove the differential bearing.
^ Discard the bearing if damaged or worn.





4. Remove the differential bearing.
^ Discard the bearing if damaged or worn.





5. Remove the speedometer drive gear.





6. Remove the shaft lock pin out from the differential case.





7. Remove the differential pinion shaft.





8. Remove the differential gears.
1 Remove the pinion gears.
2 Remove the pinion gear thrust washers.
3 Remove the side gears.
4 Remove the side gear thrust washers.
9. Inspect the differential components.
^ Check the differential case.
^ Check the side and pinion gears.
^ Check the thrust washers.
^ Ensure that the bearings rotate freely and are free of noise, pitting and cracks.

Assembly





1. Position the side gear thrust washers on the back of the differential side gears.





2. Position the pinion gear thrust washers on the back of the pinion gears.





3. Install the side gear/thrust washers into the differential case.





4. Install the pinion gears in the differential case.
^ Rotate the pinion gears to properly position.





5. Install the differential pinion shaft.





6. Install the shaft lock pin into the differential case.





7. Install the speedometer gear.





8. Install the differential bearing.





9. Install the differential bearing.

10. CAUTION: Install the final drive gear in the original position based upon the marks made during disassembly.





If removed, install the differential final drive gear.
1 Position the gear.
2 Install the bolts.
