Special Tool(s)

Disassembly

CAUTION: Mark the position of the parts for installation in their original position.





1. Using the special tool, remove the camshaft oil seal.





2. Remove the camshaft end plate.
1 Remove the bolts.
2 Remove the camshaft end plate and discard the gasket.





3. Using the special tool, install the camshaft sprocket.
1 Position the camshaft sprocket.
2 Position the special tool.
3 Install the bolt hand-tight.





4. Remove the camshaft thrust plate.
1 Hold the camshaft sprocket.
2 Remove the camshaft thrust plate bolt.
3 Remove the camshaft thrust plate.





5. Using the special tool, remove the camshaft sprocket.
1 Remove the bolt.
2 Remove the camshaft sprocket.





6. Remove the camshaft through the front of the cylinder head.
7. Inspect the camshaft.





8. Using the special tool, remove the valve collets.
1 Compress the valve spring.
2 Remove the valve collets.





9. Remove the valves.
1 Remove the valve spring retainers.
2 Remove the valve springs.
3 Remove the valves.

10. Inspect the valves and valve springs.





11. Using the special tools, remove the intake valve stem seals.





12. Remove the exhaust valve stem seals.





13. Remove the valve spring seats.

14. NOTE: Intake valve guide shown, exhaust valve guide similar.





Using the special tool, remove the valve guides.

Assembly

1. Clean and inspect the cylinder head.

2. NOTE: Intake valve guide shown, exhaust valve guide similar.





Using the special tool, install the valve guides.





3. Measure the valve guide installed height and adjust as necessary.
4. Measure the valve stem to valve guide clearance.
^ If the valve stem to guide clearance is not within specification, ream the valve guides as necessary.





5. Install the valve spring seats.





6. Install the exhaust valve stem seal.
^ Apply Super Premium SAE 5W-30 Motor Oil XO-5W30-QSP or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C153-G to the exhaust valve stem seal before installing.

7. CAUTION: The bottom of the intake valve stem seal should be 2.3 mm (0.09 inch) from the top of the lower valve spring seat when fully installed.





Using the special tool, install the intake valve stem seal.
^ Apply Super Premium SAE 5W-30 Motor Oil XO-5W30-QSP or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C153-G to the intake valve stem seal before installing.





8. Position the valve spring retainer.
1 Position the valve.
2 Position the valve spring.
3 Position the valve spring retainer.





9. Using the special tool, install the valve collets.
1 Compress the valve spring.
2 Install the valve collets.





10. Install the camshaft through the front of the cylinder head.





11. Using the special tool, install the camshaft sprocket.
1 Position the camshaft sprocket.
2 Position the special tool.
3 Install the bolt hand-tight.





12. Install the camshaft thrust plate.
1 Position the camshaft thrust plate.
2 Hold the camshaft sprocket.
3 Install the bolt.





13. Measure the camshaft end play.
^ If the camshaft end play is not within specification, adjust the camshaft end play.





14. Using the special tool, remove the camshaft sprocket.
1 Remove the bolt.
2 Remove the camshaft sprocket.





15. Install the camshaft end plate.
1 Position the gasket and camshaft end plate.
2 Install the bolts.





16. Using the special tool, install the camshaft oil seal.
Apply Super Premium SAE 5W-30 Motor Oil XO-5W30-QSP or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C153-G to the camshaft oil seal before installing.
